Hello everyone. I moved my HD and RAM from a recently deceased T40 to another (used) T40 and now the system won't allow the use of an external monitor. The "new" T40 is one sub-model higher than the dead one, so I am guessing it may have a slightly different video card or video driver. But the system seems to think the video card is the same as in the old T40, so I figure I need to somehow detect what the actual video hardware and drivers are. Other than taking the T40 apart, is there perhaps a software utility out there that could help me do that? Any ideas would be much appreciated 'cause I am stuck and badly need that external monitor for my work.
Cheers,

How to tell what's really under the hood of a T40?

Welcome to thinkpads.com!
A method which does not require running any software on your laptop(s) is to go here:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... OME-LENOVO
and plug in your TYPE number from the bottom of the system. This assumes that you (or anyone before you) has not swapped out the motherboard.
Hmm... re-reading your post, I think I may have mis-interpreted you. If you are wondering how to change the video drivers to match your "new" setup, then I think what you need to do is launch Device Manager and force a re-scan of your hardware.

Ray, thank you for the URL pointer, I was able to get the system info and updated drivers, the external monitor now works well.
Btw, I was also pointed to the Sandra system info software "It is a neat utility that tells you just about everything you need to know about your hardware, you can find it here http://www.sisoftware.net/ "
Cheers,
