Re: Are You Pre-Ordering Windows 7 ?
What was it P.T. Barnum said? :help: Ha, ha, ha... My comments "supporting" the Win7 upgrade were not based on benchmarks, which I find grossly overrated. It is an anecdotal user experience that I'm driving at. Sure, PC World has already proclaimed that Win7 is only marginally faster than Vi...

Re: how to revive a destroyed li-ion battery due to overdischarg
DO NOT MESS WITH YOUR BATTERY - including freezing, heart attack voltage jolts, etc. There is a conditioning utility in the ThinkVantage tools, but don't know if it works with Win 7. If you can't revive it with a deep charging cycle, it's time to replace. Do not attempt any self-repairs. These Li-io...

Re: Are You Pre-Ordering Windows 7 ?
My ThinkPad mini-fleet (two x60s and one x61s - gotta love those old 4:3 screens) are all going Win 7. I've used the beta and RC on all, and I can't ever see going back to XP or Vista ever again. I have found only one flaw in the entire time (power management won't shut down an external screen - but...

Re: Windows 7 Won't Shut Down External Monitor
I have the same problem with both a x61s and x60s: when you set the timer to power off an external montior, nothing happens. Same for setting a screen saver. Since the x60s and x61s have different video chips, I thought this was odd, besides the fact my 22" monitor stays on all night. Google HAS NO...

Re: What's The Big Deal With Netbooks?
That was a bit of hyperbole on my part (sweeping the field). You are right, these are interesting times. I'll bet I was even one of the few folks who bought one of those "pocketable" WinCE devices with the lousy non-backlit mono-LCD's and tiny keyboards, and wished they were as small and good...

Re: What's The Big Deal With Netbooks?
I guess I must fit in the "tweener" category, and that's why I'm so hyped on the x61s and dismissive of netbooks. I don't want to have multiple computers and all the attendant synchronizing headaches (okay, is the file on my netbook, laptop, desktop, or the office server?) I started out years ago wi...

Re: X40 is next move up X60?
Windows 7 note: This is only anecdotal (ie - no benchmarking because I prefer real world experience than theoretical speed) - Win 7 (64bit) on the x61s is much "snappier" than Win 7 (32bit) on the x60s. Can't tell if it's the video subsystem, or extra 1gb of ram it can see, but Win 7 on the x61s is ...

What's The Big Deal With Netbooks?
I'm now on my third "X" machine (x40; x60s; x61s) and I don't get all the fuss about netbooks. Granted, original retail on my X's cost much more than an Asus, but then the X's have always been full force computers and not wannabes. You can now dip into the refurb/used market for $400-$800 for the fu...

Re: X40 is next move up X60?
From personal experience, the move from the x40s to the x60s was a huge leap in speed and functionality. The availability of easily upgradeable 2.5" SATA drives alone is worth the jump (can go all the way to 500gb 7200rpm Seagate for $150). Loved the 4gb ram, but the chipset will only support 3gb ev...

Re: slow hibernation/sleep.
Despite not liking OS X (I actually tried to use it for the better part of 6 months) this is one area where Microsoft needs to take a lesson. The old black MacBook sleeps and wakes up nearly instantly, even when switching between office (ethernet) and home (wireless). It would seem to me that rather...

Re: IE 8 Flies on Windows 7
For me it is fairly sluggish on Vista Business 64 (Chrome and Firefox run circles around it) but on Windows 7, it smokes them both. I wonder if it's just a better marriage, or if we're in for a new round of "Windows ain't done until Chrome won't run?" (for you youngster out there, this comes from th...

IE 8 Flies on Windows 7
I "upgraded" a few months ago from my X60s to an X61s. The X61s came pre-loaded with Vista Business 64-bit, 4gb ram and a 320gb/7200rpm HD. I replaced XP SP3 on the old X60s with the first beta of Windows 7 (7000) with 3gb ram and a 100gb/7200rpm HD. I can't begin to describe how much faster, more r...

Re: Vista Ultimate or Vista Business 32
I don't think you mentioned which ThinkPad you were getting. If it has a Santa Rosa chipset, or better, it can access 4-8gb with a 64-bit OS. I just bought (before they closed out) an x61s with Vista Business 64-bit SP1 and it runs like a top (knock on wood) even when using sleep mode all the time a...

Re: buy new TP now or wait til Win7 released
As for the migration path issue, whether XP or Vista, I still feel the best upgrade is a clean install of the OS. I know, it's a pain in the _____ having to install all your software and preferences, but ever since Windows 95 that has been much more successful for me. Besides, unless you do the two ...

No. The X60s chipset will only support 3gb, regardless of OS. I've had 4gb in both of mine and 3gb is all it will use.

Hi there! I have an X61s that has been connected to the AC-outlet for a few days, and even so, the battery is now down to 98%(from 100). Is that a built in feature, i mean, why would the computer use the battery at startup when it is connected to AC? Any ideas? I think I read somewhere that it will...

Re: x61s Support for 800mhz Memory
I have done some "checking" with Task Manager, and so far 2.2gb seems to be the sweet spot of program use, as even multiple Word windows, Outlook, and a browser or two soak that up; but dig a little further, and you'll see the system uses ALL BUT 70mb, using the other nearly 2gb as system cache. I c...

bluesceada and Marin85 I believe it is mostly a question of future-proofing. At every level (since my mega 640kb Toshiba 1100 plus) I ended up maxing out memory on the system unit. If you're not careful, you will find yourself missing the sweet spot as memory always starts high, tapers quickly, and ...

Why is it that I have the same level of skepticism of the a 5.9 point "performance" scale as I do of a color coded threat level scale for security...wouldn't both be much more understandable if a standardized five or even ten point scale?

Re: Windows 7: more folder name change confusion
Sorry, but the whole concept of "libraries" is stupid. I understand that it is an attempt to idiot proof the users so they can find all their JPG files scattered in various folders, but it wrecks havoc in a business network environment mixing your network and local folders, particularly for notebook...
