Old thread but I just re-applied the thermal paste and cleaned the machine - there was a lot of dust. It now runs very cool. I can again watch 1080p full movies with no shut down.

Swapping HD's in a X301
I'm concerned that my X301's fan is about to fail as it is making some strange noises. If I swap the hard drive into another X301 I have will it work?
I will repair the primary X301 but in the short term will this solution work?
thanks

If you have a product key there are many places you can down load it from. That's what I did and installed via usb - very quick.

Did you find much dust in the fan? Or dust in general?RealBlackStuff wrote: I refreshed the thermal paste with AS5 about 5 months ago.
It's running as smooth and cool as can be!

Re: X301 Hot in Lap
Although the RAM probably does run hot my view is the problem is related more to dust and thermal paste. I have had this machine since new for nearly 4 years. And only recently has it began to get very hot. In fact it will now shut down after 30 mins of watching a HD youtube video. I'm just wonderin...

Just saw that video. That is a lot of work. Is it all necessary for removing the fan and applying the thermal paste? I guess I will have to put aside half a day to do this.

I was looking for another one of these machines and managed to get this one - quite a deal I'm sure you would agree!! Just got it and it looks in very good nick. Tiny crack near rear RJ socket. But I'm a sucker for things in their original box.

Do you have just an SD card reader or a Micro SD card reader? I tried two 64gb Micro SD cards and it would not work - in fact the system just didn't boot. I now use two 32gb micro SD cards and I can access the memory, however it still stalls on boot about one in three times. I did consider getting t...

Have you actually tried using 128gb in the Micro SD card reader? I found it didn't work and speaking to the seller of the reader the max it can read is 64gb (2 x 32gb).

X301 Left Touchpad Button Working Intermittently
Hi All,
My left Touch Pad button is only working if I press it really hard. Has anybody come across this before? I took the palm rest off and blew compressed air through it but it's still the same. Do the buttons disemble easily? I will be keeping an eye out for a new palm rest.
Kind Regards

Re: X301 WWAN issue
Let windows take care of it. I assume you can turn on the WWAN card. Then go to the icon in the lower right corner it will display the network your sim card logs onto. Enter the APN, username and password and off you go - not sure if windows did this automatically.

I had an X301 for a while, but was shocked by how poor the screen was. I would not use the Caddy if you are expecting to get fast speeds out of it - I believe it is restricted to USB speeds so not very fast. I got a 256gb Samsung drive and plenty of RAM my view is that there is not much in it between the various SSD's the jump you see is from using an SSD over an HDD. ...

I use the Samsung RAM too and it's working for me. The one's I use are the 1333Mhz but if I remember correctly it will only run at 1066Mhz. Now the only thing I am considering is whether to create a RAM disk? Does anybody have experience of them? - I tend to have atleast 4gb of RAM free.

As the CPU cannot be changed it is sensible to buy the most powerful one possible. One annoying issue I have run into is that drivers don't get updated for the X301. So when I upgraded the SSD I decided to download a copy of windows 7 from MS and then install it via a USB and then download all the d...
