Re: T41: Which HDD to buy? .. and Samsung HM160HC issues.
Load_Retry_Count is over 5000 now, up from 400-ish 3 days ago. Superclicks ranging from once every 15-20 seconds to once per second. Methinks this drive will be toast soon.

Re:
I'm using Windows most of the time. I've added hdparm -B 254 hda BAT file to the Autostart. The setting seems to survive both suspend and hibernation so there is no need to reissue it after those. It doesn't survive reboot so it has to be put into the Autostart. I haven't heard any "superclicks" si...

Re: Max hard drive size for T42? 160 or 320 GB known OK?
I just installed a Samsung 160GB HM160HC in my T42 week before last, no problems once I implented the hdparm fix (do a forum search for details) for the "superclick". The drive is quiet as can be.

T42 CPU running very hot after Win 7 RTM install
Installed Win 7 Enterprise RTM on my 1.7 GHz T42 last week, and the CPU has been running excessively hot (mid-80s C) under routine use (internet, word processing, etc). The fan unit was replaced with a new one a year ago. GPU temp is in the 60s C. Is it mere coincidence that this is occurring after ...

4GB RAM in T4x under Win 7?
Appears that all 32-bit versions of Win 7 support up to 4GB of memory. Does that mean it's now possible to load up a T4x with 2x2GB? Or is 2x1GB a hardware limitation?

Re: Max external screen resolution T42 1440x1050
I'm running a Samsung 2343BWX (2048px x 1152px, 16:9), via DVI and a port replicator. It was completely plug-and-play with my T42, no driver witchcraft needed. Windows XP's display properties dialog detected the monitor's native resolution and presented it as an option in the drop-down. Couldn't hav...

Re: T42 HDD upgrade time, suggestions?
What is the manufacturer and model of the drive? It's the stock Hitachi 80GB. While in the USB enclosure, did you run "Error-checking" with "Automatically fix file system errors" and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" turned on ? I didn't. CHKDSK from the WinXP recovery console choked d...

Re: T42 HDD upgrade time, suggestions?
I ran SpinRite 6 on it overnight, it got only 0.2% through by morning. What other diagnostics do you suggest? I pulled it from the T42, put it into a USB enclosure and was able to pull off a few critical files onto another PC but that was an extremely slow process.

T42 HDD upgrade time, suggestions?
Let a Windows Update run yesterday afternoon and for my sins was rewarded upon reboot with a disk read error, which I cannot seem to work around. Sooo, it looks like I'm in the market for a new HDD. External 2048x1152 widescreen with a docked T42 possible?
I'm considering picking up one of those new 23" 16:9 Samsung 2343BWX displays, 2048x1152 native resolution, what are the chances it'll work with my T42 through the dock's DVI connector? Anybody tried this yet? Are the devices capable of this? Are there driver limitations?

T42 Display Hinge Replacement...anybody done it?
My trusty T42 was recently subjected to a fall from an airline overhead compartment that cracked the left display hinge from its base. I've been looking through the HMM and replacing the hinges looks to be surgery of a more severe degree than I'm comfortable with as you basically have to complete di...

My T42 has the same problem...some sort of debris between the layers of the LCD. I'm nervous about sending it in for warranty replacement as this one has developed only one bad pixel that I never notice unless I hunt for it. The crap inside the LCD is another story, though--but I'm worried that the ...

After almost a year of blissfully happy ownership, my T42 developed its first "bad" pixel, one solitary stuck-on green one. The good news is that at SXGA+ resolution, it's so friggin small that I have to hunt for it to see it. Now, what's REALLY pissing me off is the small amount of "debris" that's ...

8X DVD-Rs a problem for T42 multiburners?
Best Buy had a deal on TDK 8X DVD-Rs--$9.95 for a spindle of 25--so I picked one up. Before I open the package though, I wanted to see if anyone has had a problem with these using the T42 multiburner.

After 161 cycles since June, my battery's full-charge capacity is now 26.87 Wh, down from the design capacity of 47.52 Wh. I find it hard to believe that a battery losing half its capacity in less than a year is typical. At this rate, am I really looking at having to replace my battery every year???
