Have you tried swapping the drives yet? blackomegax, Looks like your recent X40 has the same drive as the X41/X41T's. IBM/Lenovo must have conslidated some of their parts between the two lines recently. The 40GB hard drive in my March 2004 X40 still reports the "HITACHI" vendor string, while your 40...

Interesting to see an x40 drive reporting no cache. Even so, all the drives look like they should have working caches judging from the benches . No way can we have these kind of burst rates and not have working caches. The newer drives seem to have better performance as well. Its looking more and mo...

I’m pretty lost here now.. According to the spec from Hitachi this hdd are suppose to have 2MB cache.. it is that all this program can't see this cache memory or is it that most of use have a bad hdd..?? That's why I wanted to compare performance. If the hard drives indeed have bad caches than ther...

My HD Tune results for my X41T are pretty much on par with yours. The performance isn't pretty, but I don't think even that kind of performance can be achieved with no cache. The X40 score is pretty close and is suppose to be killing the X41T with no cache but it isn't. It's really looking like the ...

Seeking Help From X40 Owners - Please Post HD Benchmarks
-Several X41 and X41 tablet users are reporting hard drives with no/0 cache, when running hd tune or Hitachi's drive fitness software. -Many are also reporting clicking hard drives and there is reason to think that the clicking is related to the cache issue. I think the cache may be being reported i...

The way to prove it? Take an HDD out of a stuttering X41T, put it in an X41 non-T that performs fine, and is configured IDENTICALLY. If it stutters, it's the OS or the HDD (yes, the HDD. Bad performance can be caused by a failing HDD.) If it doesn't, it's the X41T itself. Or, you can check if the c...

To add even more speculative fire to the mix (just for fun), might this be the cause of the mouse pointer stuttering problem on the X41 Tablet (which does not occur on the X40)... i have a X41 (non-tablet) and didn't have any mouse pointer problem yet. my cache is displayed too as 0MB. The X41 tabl...

That's not what I'm irratated about. Ok lets break it down. 1.X40 and X41T both have 1.8inch Hitachi Travelstar drives which have 2 meg caches. 2. Many X41T users report having no 2 meg caches.(Via DFT, HDTune) 3. Many X40 users report having 2 meg caches. (Via DFT, HDTune) 4. The X40 and X41T have ...

Re: USB-powered optical drive
I took the geeky route and bought an enclosure that runs off USB and a bare DVD burner drive to go in it. The enclosure can be found at http://www.centrix-intl.com/?DirectBuy=yes&ItemPartNumber=EX-BLK-01 and the drive I got was the Poineer dvr-k15 (though I hear the dvr-k051 (slot load disc), Panas...

Bill Morrow , I think you have access to both an X40 and an X41T. Can you run some benchmarks or can you just insert the X41T drive into the X40 and see if you can see the cache?(By running drive fitness, etc) This is getting kind of irritating, I'm asking you X40 owners to help out the X41T users ...

Just wanted to say that the tablet has been excellent for student use. I'm surprised more students aren't using it yet.(I'm sure more will as prices go down) In smaller classrooms I usually use one note with the mic on. Pretty awesome feature when you can just click on a part of your notes..and the ...

The Kingston ram is just as good, I bought it for my tablet and no ram problems so far. I've read about a tour of one of their factories by anandtech.com. Pretty impressive stuff. Crucial used to be great when they were bit of a secret and had quality ram at cheaper prices then everyone else. Now th...

It's possible to add bluetooth. I did it on my thinkexpress model. 1. You just replace the modem cdc card with the modem/bluetooth cdc card.($52) 2. Order the bluetooth antenna($12.50) take apart the laptop and install it at the edge of the lcd or you tuck it into a nook somewhere and let it be. :) ...

The 8 cell does add an inch, but those are the dimensions for the regular X41, not the Tablet. The dimensions for the tablet are with 4-cell 10.8"x9.5"x1.14-1.26" and 3.5 lbs with 8-cell 10.8"x10.5"x1.14-1.26" and 4.0 lbs Joel Ok..those figures are right...I was looking at Thompsons dimensions..the...

You guys are asking for a lot in a small amount of space. More stuff = a bigger tablet. You've just designed IBM's version of the Toshiba M4 Dr. Dan. Get ready for lots of heat(uncomfortable to hold as a tablet in most cases)...and noway will it be four pounds. For the tablet...IBM chose the slower ...
