Thinkpad G41 and A31p - rave :)
Thinkpad G41 and A31p - rave :)
I happened to see a G41 and a A31p, both with the famous UXGA (first time I am seeing an UXGA) LCD on campus today and holy mother of god, they are amongst the most amazing computers I have set my eyes on. By amazing, I mean jaw-breakingly amazing - the displays were better than some CRTs I have used in the past! The engineers who desingned the A31p out to be given some awards for the sheer boldness of the design. The machines were there in one of the computer labs with another A31p exposing its innards - the dual bays impressed me a LOT. And boy, are these laptops heavy! I begged the sysadmin to let me play with the G41 for a while and got to spend some 45 minutes on the machine, and I loved every minute of it. These are seriously good machines, and take the IBM thinkpad legacy to great giddy heights.

Ebay has some awesome new-in-box A3x machines for <$450 - someone buy these machines FAST and keep them in stock for me!!

By no means I want to disappoint you but I could've been of some help if you had posted earlier. I just sold my 3 years old A31p (one user) locally, last week for $280.
It was P4-M 1.6Ghz with 512MB memory, 30GB HDD and 15'' TFT screen. It had no scratches/dings/spots at all. Most of all everything was working flawlessly.
I even gave away a free Linksys wireless notebook card.
Happy hunting on ebay though.

I owned an A31p and have seen my friend's G40. Both are humongous and ugly. That's the main reason I sold that A31p after just one week.dr_st wrote:G41, though? It's a monster. I think it's too big and heavy to be considered a worthy laptop.

The A31P serves as a great desktop replacement!pianowizard wrote:I owned an A31p and have seen my friend's G40. Both are humongous and ugly. That's the main reason I sold that A31p after just one week.

5.5K+ posts and all I've got to show for it are some feathers.... AND a Bird wearing a Crown
A great desktop replacement, perhaps, but I don't believe in desktop replacements. After all, a 15" T-series or R-series can be just as good a desktop replacement as the A-series, and at the same time it will be portable enough to actually use as a laptop most of the time.
The A series certainly had its value back before the T and R series had 15" hi-res Flexview displays. With the introduction of the latter it's pretty clear why the A series was discontinued.
And the G series are just monsters. 0.5kg heavier than the A, which itself is 0.5kg heavier than the R. Their only advantage that I can see is a built-in floppy, but very few will value it, when USB flash disks are so cheap, fast and bootable.

I wouldn't mind a heavy laptop that looks nice, as long as I also have another, more portable laptop or a PDA. I didn't like the A31p or G40 because they were heavy and ugly.dr_st wrote:A great desktop replacement, perhaps, but I don't believe in desktop replacements. I have seen a G40 (more than one G40 actually, see some of my treads on the ThinkPad pictures forum) and a A30p before. I think that they are great ThinkPad's and they make great desktop replacements. I think that they look cool and not ugly.

Re: A31/G40
I definitely agree with this, since I think the G Series machines are ugly in a hummer sort of way, but love the A3x in a kinda big Bently sort of way.Temetka wrote:What it comes down to:

I love my T41P. I think it looks great. Others don't. Whatever.
