It's most probably one of the ''decider'' reasons why a lot of buyers opt for the IBM...it was mine I know when I was ''undecided''
It's a pity that these machines can only be bought over here from reseller sites on the web. ..If you haven't actually been able to ''handle'' one of these you don't really appreciate their quality...it's amazing how ''flimsy'' a lot of other makes feel after getting used to the IBM.
Even PC World don't ''show'' the IBM though they sell it on their Business web site...strange

As I've been working for over three hours ( taking a break now) with this machine on my lap, I totally agree with you, the base is only slightly warm, if the screen wasn't on any-one could be forgiven for thinking that it wasn't in use.Batuta wrote: But there are certain aspects of (current) ThinkPad quality I find hard to reproduce on other systems.
The keyboard is certainly one of these, battery life and noise ratio is another.
Totally enamoured with IBM machines at the moment
I've searched posts but can't find anything relating to this, any enlightenment from any-one.Batuta wrote:But I wonder if APS requires any kind of drivers or is it purely BIOS based?
I could see no BIOS options to activate or deactivate it on my machine.
Also, does the T42p have APS as well?

You beat me to it eriqesque
just found this......
''Both the hardware sensor integrated into the system board and the software are needed for the Active Protection system to function. If the software is not installed on a system that has the hardware, the Active Protection system will not function. If the Active Protection system software is installed on a system that does not have the Active Protection system hardware, an error message will be displayed stating that the system does not support the Active Protection system and it should be uninstalled''

It is a self-contained application so far as I can see using the sensors from the system board. If you open the application (sits in the system tray) you can easily see the option to disable it if you choose. I would not so choose because it works well and protects the drive. ... I believe the APS is by default ON, that is by hardware. What you are missing on other OS is the ability to turn it off and also the nice status program. That said, it is strange that IBM hasn't released a driver for Linux since all the other aspects of a Thinkpad (even the ESS) are covered.Batuta wrote:So then how is APS supposed to work if one doesn't run Windows???
Stavros
EDIT: Just saw a few posts above a statement contradicting what I wrote, however I have read (I'll try to find the source) of people stating its use under Thinkpads that run Linux.
