Requesting input on what model I should look to get

#1 Post by maritinus » Sat Mar 29, 2025 8:12 pm

I am a college student + in laboratory research. Laptop will be used for schoolwork and the like. Presumably needs to run Windows and its affiliated apps (excel & powerpoint particularly), afaik won’t be doing anything particularly strenuous and just need to be able to run browsers + extensions, a statistics program (JASP), and other quality of life applications like Breezip/Zoom/SumatraPDF.
What I’m mainly looking for is a laptop that’ll work reasonably well for 5+ years (happy to upgrade parts when needed). Also okay with investing in some power banks and a protective case. Disclaimer that I am not a computers guy: In my research of what computer to get I see specs being described, google them, and still don’t really get it. I’m fairly bad with technology in general (for years I would hand-compute statistics because I couldn’t figure out how to apply excel functions to data sets).
ETA: Would prefer to buy used as ideally I'd like to spend less than $600.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you for reading and hope you all have a nice day/night!

Your needs are fairly modest so anything recent should fit the bill. You'd probably help you cause by saying what you're looking to spend and whether you want new or used.

If you could put your locale in your profile so other may see, it would be appreciated. Good luck my friend.
