ThinkPad E480 Getting Hot connecting Monitor via HDMI

#1 Post by Turbo_Boss » Fri Jun 20, 2025 1:44 pm

Hello

I have a Thinkpad E480 with Intel Core i5 8th Gen, 16GB of RAM, 1TB SSD with a factory UHD 620 graphics card.

I only use this laptop for work and don't play any games on it.

The laptop gets very hot when I connect a monitor via HDMI.

When it gets hot, the computer slows down.

On Lenovo's website, they scanned my laptop and found that all my drivers are up to date.

I would appreciate it if you could help me solve my problem.

Thx & Rgds

Isaac

1) Are you using the laptop's screen and the external monitor at the same time?

2) When was the last time you did maintenance on the CPU cooler?
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch
Impulse Buy: Thinkpad not named for safety reasons

Hey Axur

Thx for your reply

1) Are you using the laptop's screen and the external monitor at the same time?

Yes, both at the same time. Most of the time with Excel that have photos

2) When was the last time you did maintenance on the CPU cooler?[/quote]

Don't Remember :?

But, I was checking this last saturday on the Intel Website and downloaded a Driver Update for the graphics card and it look like this solve the problem....

What I notice now is that on the Energy Setup when the laptop is connected to the AC power supply, if I have the Energy in Maximum Performance is getting HOT but in Better Performance is not getting hot.

When is working with the battery and Energy is Maximum Performance is not getting Hot. So I think this driver upgrade solve my issue.

Don't understand why when the Window is checking for update does not updated this graphics card driver. :??:

I will keep monitoring the temperature and hope is working ok, if not I will be back.

Thx for your time and help

Isaac
