Selling thinkpad- Warranty transfer?
I spent an hour on the phone with 10 different people at IBM, from Atlanta to New Delhi. I just sold my R40 that had an extended 1 year warranty on it.
When I originally bought it and called up for warranty info, they had the previous owners information- Name, address, phone, place of business, etc. I do not want the person I'm selling to knowing all of that, as they shouldn't.
I understand that warranty itself is not transferable, but what's to stop the person I'm selling to from calling up, giving them my phone number, and having access to my personal information?
So far I'm 0 for 2 in having any success resolving my issues with IBM over the phone.

I am very surprised at your experience. When I call up for warranty assistance they always ask me for my info. If I say "you have it on file, as I registered the computer, they always demand it again. Never have they given out my information. However I must say this was "pre-Lenovo" perhaps there has been a change. That said I still cannot imagine with all the legal exposure that they would give out your information.
I usually keep my ThinkPads, however recently I decided to sell one and I called in to transfer the warranty to the buyer and learned that is not needed, as the warranty automatically follows the machine. They have no process for transferring the name of the owner.dsigma6 wrote:I understand that warranty itself is not transferable, but what's to stop the person I'm selling to from calling up, giving them my phone number

thanks guys. i understood it was "transferable" but that is certainly misleading to someone who thinks it will be in their name. it's silly that they won't change the info, but policy is policy.
lucky for me, i met the guy in person and he didn't look like he would know how to get my information. and yes, it is insane that they told me the previous owners information. here i was with a knife in my pocket in case he pulled some crazy [censored], and i ended up being a judgemental, paranoid idiot. better safe than sorry!
my first and probably last in-person craigslist transaction.
