Updating Embedded Controller dosn't work

I have a T42P with XPSP2. When I run the Embedded Controller Program Update Utility (1rhj10us.exe) there a 4 screens (Licence, OpenFiles...). When I click Next on Screen 4, windows will shutdown automatically and makes an restart. No Program Update Utility screen appears.
What did I do wrong ?

it should shut down and restart with the utility...

Not sure if this is still the case, but there used to be a problem where BIOS updaters (very similar to the EC updater) wouldn't work if they were nested too deep in a directory tree. Maybe try copying it to the desktop and running it from there?

I try it direct from c:\1rhj10us.exe. The same result.

yeah, i can't update the darn bios either , it was going to update to my r40

unfortunatley i didn't find a solution yet.
...waiting for the next bios and ecp.

maybe a disk-version of the update can do the trick!
i still dont't know how the non-disk version generally works.

'hope anyone will fix our problem soon!

I'm no expert but I believe it builds a virtual boot disk in memory and then sets that as the boot drive.

Have either of you messed with the boot loader? Installed GRUB, BootMagic, or another utility that lets you select an OS to load?

do you have updating flash bios disabled by end users, esp set when supervisor password is set ?

a update via a diskette should work, if you are having problems with your windows installation, esp if it is unable to get enough resources for the virtual dos drivers ( may be you are already using a virtual floppy to mount floppy images ? )

BIOS update setting in the BIOS is enabled/allowed, right?

hi folks,
thanks for your replies.

i didn't change the bios-setup, so flashing is allowed, no password....

earlier bios/ecp updates worked with no problems.
i always use bios defaults settings with ibm thinkpads.

there are no boot loaders (linux etc.) installed....it is still the original
ibm installation. ok, i uninstalled crappy things like ibm message center
and easy eject utility, but no further changes.

i tried a disk-update using an usb-stick but the update didn't start
automatically and i didn't know which file to start...so i quit the update
before killing my system

at the moment the bios update isn't mandatory, but i like to get improvements with the next bios/ecp updates.

Silly question, but you do have a fully charged battery and AC power applied, right?

yippa egibbs.
my battery was fully charged.
the first time i tried the update the battery wasn't fully charged,
but then i followed the instructions on the screen very carefully

and charged the battery to 100%. no change!
and no error message either, the machine just restarts windows.
btw, power cord is also plugged in....

um, have you checked the version reported to see if it's the same as what you are trying to update to or in fact was appled sucessfully the first time?

both version (bios and ecp) are the successiv versions of those installed.

i checked the versions (and requirements) in the ibm readme twice.
all updates of the previous version worked fine.

hmmm...

If it was my Thinkpad I'd be inclined to leave it alone...and I say that even though I have, um, more than one.

But if you really want to try it manually the file is UPDTFLSH.EXE and the procedure is something like this- 1> boot from a plain vanilla dos disk (can be made in win xp) 2> swap the disk for the one created with 1rhj10ud.exe or whatever the name of the corect update is, then type uptdflsh at the a:\ prompt and press <enter>.

BTW, no fully charged battery is required, and if you ever have to "flash back" to an older version this is how.

I've seen this before.

Please make sure you are logged in as an administrative user to Windows. I've done this succesfully by:

a) Logging in as administrator
b) Using the Run-As command to run as administrator.

If your user account doesn't have full rights, you won't be able to run the flash update.

thanx for your reply.
but i have admin rights. i did the previous update with the same user.
it is not the "administrator" user but the user has admin rights.
and i as i said, all previous updates were succesful with this user-profile.
i also tried starting the update from c:\temp\ and c:\
to avoid a possible error because of the directory structure or sth.

to slagmi:
i think i will leave it alone and wait for the next update.
maybe i will try the disk-update when an "old-school"
usb-floppy-drive crosses my way....

I assume guys that you do not use windows encrypting file system. If you do disable encryption for hidden directory "documents and settings/ .../username/application data/temp) before running update.

Hi,

I think i found a solution for my problems (non-disk ecp- and bios-update not working).

I did a full defragmentation of my harddrive using trial versions of Diskeeper (www.executive.com) and PerfectDisk (www.raxco.com).

I am not sure if a heavy fragmented filesystem was the cause but
some weeks after that I tried to update my bios and it worked!
