A thinkpad server?

#1 Post by wujstefan » Wed Apr 06, 2011 2:13 pm

I am planning to set up a thing that would serve me a bit like a server.

I am simply wondering which tp model should I choose? For what I have planned I need:
- at least one USB 2.0
- possibly low watt consumption while LCD off
- cool & quiet
- small
- cheap :)

The first thought was T30, but then I did realised I rather would like something with integrated graphics to extend lifespan.
And now I'm in a dead end. What should I actually do now? Any suggestions what will suit my needs the most?

Well, T30 doesn't have USB 2.0 so that's a no-go to begin with...

My guess would go along the lines of R51 with Intel graphics (model numbers starting in 28xx)...they came in 14" XGA guise.

Good luck.

I just set Win Server 2008 (x86) this past week, works like a charm. 2GB Ram and 250 GB HD, same original processor with USB and 1GB Ethernet. This was my laptop before the T410.

From his posts, it would have to be a T40.

X40 is pretty cheap, about ~200 PLN.

No.

Only certain R51, R52 and T43 units were available with Intel integrated graphics.

What are we doing with Windows Server 2008? I have a few tp's; 2 are always on and 3 if I count the tp in the living room feeding the home stereo.

Sorry for that, a T41. Right now I'm using it as a file server but will move to some sort of DB Server soon (SQL Server or DB2 or Oracle) when I add an external HD. I have AD DS, DNS and File Server roles active. All this is because I want to, not need to, a USB external HD on my T410 would be enough but this is more fun!
The T41 was just sitting around collecting dust just begging to be used and it was cheaper than building/buying at this time. I've used old thinkpads before as servers running OS/2 Warp Server and Windows Server 2003.
If I had wanted to spend a few bucks for another thinkpad to be a server, I'd have gotten a T60 or T61 and ran 64 bit versions of WS 2008 R2.
