Hmm, recovery CDs from IBM are CD-Rs
Hmm, recovery CDs from IBM are CD-Rs
First time I really looked at them. Too bad, I was hoping they would be pressed (last longer for archival). I guess I could have just used 8 CDRs and made my own set. Oh well, I'm still glad they fedex'd them so quickly.
Did everyone else who ordered them also get CDRs?

Re: Hmm, recovery CDs from IBM are CD-Rs
I mentioned in the original post that they should be pressed, like every other computer manufacturer (or any CD product maker, period) gives. Wouldn't you feel a little upset if you bought a music CD and found it was a dye-burned CD-R?
I am grateful that they were sent free, but I wanted the IBM copies so I could have an archival set that wouldn't degrade in a relatively small amount of time. Access IBM lets us burn our own copies, if I knew IBM sent out CD-Rs I would have made my own and not troubled them.

The first set of recovery CDs I got for my 1 year old T40 were burned but subsequent sets for other computers were pressed. I figured they sent out early recovery CD sets that had been burned prior to setting up a pressing facility/process.

Also free if your Hard Drive doesn't pass the driver fitness test (download the file from the IBM site) and your machine is still under warranty. This is what happened to me last week....they sent me a new HD and a set of recovery discs.
Now...does it matter that the CD code and the actual code in windows XP is different?

Got mine today for the T42. They're pressed. If they have a printed paper label, then I think they're burned. If it's printer directly onto the plastic, then I think they're pressed.

Nope, mine have the text printed directly onto the media, and they're still clearly burns - you can see the blue shade of the color-change dye on the back. It's even printed on the disc "recorded in USA".sktn77a wrote:Got mine today for the T42. They're pressed. If they have a printed paper label, then I think they're burned. Yepp, that's a very good idea to keep the service partition. I don't really know what many ppl has against this hidden 3 GB partition. Isn't this 5x better than a recovery CD? Why you wanna get rid of it anyway? Having more space, an extra 3 GB? Come on, get a life! I think the recovery partition is far better than other companies recovery solution. Sure it does not save you from having a disc package for the case of a HDD faliure, but that's rarely the case anyway... and if that happens they send you a HDD and the disks overnight anyway.
Beside this I'm going to save the CD's images on a DVD, just in case... but I seem to be very paranoid already with a hard drive which has a recovery partition plus a recovery disk set, plus a DVD containing the recovery CD set...
I should get a life too i think and just use this beautiful laptop as is...
