Password Manager

#1 Post by krcmd » Fri Sep 12, 2008 8:16 am

I recently moved my HD from a t43 to a t43P. I now see that all my passwords on on the t43P.

I thought the passwords resided in the security chip. Since not, how can I verify that the disk file is encripted?

Is there a description of thinkpad security systems that doesn't require lifelong study or EE degree?

thanks

The passwords do not reside in the security chip. All the chip does is provide the base encryption algorithm for the system, which is what CSS & Password Manager uses to encrypt them.

My guess is that when you moved the drive to the T43p, the system regenerated the keys that tied that hard drive to the other systems TPM. When it did that, it carried over all of your data, which included your passwords.

Thank you.

I did set up the 43p CSS with the same passwords. Do THEY reside on the chip?
