Domain expiry - what now?

#1 Post by syssifus » Tue May 27, 2025 1:13 pm

Hey there,
it seems like the domain for the forum will expire in four days, with renewal and transfer blocked. What's going to happen to this forum?
If this forum is going to die, could you at least publish the phpbb files so the forum doesn't have to be scraped and can be searchably reproduced somewhere else?
Either way, I hope this isn't the end. So what's the plan?
Thanks!

Uh oh... I believe Bill Morrow is not available for an extended period of time, but RBS was maintaining the site in the meantime - I hope this place isn't going anywhere.

Edit: I checked whois for this domain and it appears to have been updated on the 29th. Expiry is now set to 2030 - I think we're ok.

Nope, I was never maintaining the site, just assisting/supervising.
It's strictly up to Bill Morrow what happens further.

Well oof, I can't edit my posts here because they're locked in moderator limbo, but I can confirm your findings now. godaddy's own whois lookup has the new date set.

And this explains a lot, taken from reddit:
That status is set by Godaddy. It's not telling Godaddy they can't renew it.

Godaddy, like most registars lock domains to prevent domain hijacking. GD sets the following by default on every domain when it's in locked status.

clientDeleteProhibited

clientRenewProhibited

clientTransferProhibited

clientUpdateProhibited

It's simply for protection. When the registrant wants to transfer it or even update contact info, they must login to Godaddy and unlock it first. GD technically doesn't need it unlocked to renew the domain, and auto-renew happens on the expiration date.
