MSR Editing tools and Dual IDA T61

Has anybody had experience with using MSR tools to enable faster clocks on T61s running Middleton's BIOS + linux? If I make a change using this tool, does this write to the BIOS and make things permanent, or does the change go away once the computer is rebooted? Is it possible to damage hardware?
Current Thinkpads: W530 (functional classic keyboard mod), X301, T61, T60, T43, A31p, T23, 600X, 770
