T30 100 GB HDD
Hi:
Who can confirm which 100 GB HDDs can be used in a T30? I understand that a Hitachi does not work.
thanks

It is posted on this and other forums that the only Hitachi 100 GB which will work are those sold by IBM/Lenovo.

The only posting on this forum I can find that indicates there may be problem with certain drives in certain thinkpads is this http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=11059 which is related to "non-supported" drives on T43's giving an error on boot that is an irritant rather than "not working".
It's likely the only other circumstance where a 100gb drive may not work is if the BIOS needs to be updated.

I've tried installing a Hitachi 5400 100 GB HDD. It is not recognised by the T30. The BIOS is updated.
What I really need are posts from those who have successfully installed a 100 GB HDD in the T30

The Hitachi compatibility summary (to be found at http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/compatibility.htm ) indicates that 5k100 drives, including model HTS541010G9AT00 were tested and found to be compatable with various machines, including a T30, model 2366-86U.

Dsvochak,
I have successfully installed Hitachi HTS721010G9AT00's (7200 100's) into my T30 2366-97U with 2.06 Bios. I run 2 100's (main and in the bay).
I used Norton Ghost (old version that runs off floppy disk) and cloned from my 60 gig Hitatchi to the 100GB. No issues! I have upgraded over the years from 60 to 80 and now 100GB...all Hitatchi. The only ones I didn't like were the 5400 80's. Very noisey, one crashed and others seemed to be on their way to crash. Just didn't trust them.
They 100's work great.
I know I don't have the lastest bios, but they have been working great for a couple of months. Fast, quiet and smooth.
Also have 2GB of RAM upgrade which also works just fine.
This machine has been a workhorse and I have more than received my money's worth.
Also make sure you get the memory door upgrade (slightly larger cover). It really makes it run a lot cooler.
Good luck,
John

Yes, thanks .. I have 1.18 as for the bios.
UpSideDown?
Yeah, I thought about that as well, but it's installed correctly.
(I compared the socket orientation to the original)
DOA?
Nope, running fine on my desktop (with adapter)
Not fully seated?
I checked that and even installed it without the caseing.
Same thing.
I'm almost sure about the drive not spinning up, but will check again.
The drive is so darn slient it's hard to determine whether it is spinning or not.
Geez ... I want to get this running! Leave alone the $$$ I've invested so far.
Any help is greatly appreciated ...
Cheers!

Are you certain there are NO jumpers installed on the HD?Torque12 wrote:I just got word from another colleague who wasn't able to get that SAMSUNG 100GB drive to work either.
Can you indeed hear it spin up?
This is very troubling.
What does Samsung say?

I just bought and installed a 100GB drive this past weekend in my T30.
100GB/7200RPM/Hitachi/Travelstar (9.5mm thick)
Had no problems at all, these are the steps I took...
- Put the 100GB drive in a USB drive enclosure.
- Cloned 40GB drive onto 100GB disk with Acronis True Image 9.0.0.2337 (Kept the recovery partition the same size instead of auto scaling).
- Updated the bios (2.09) then the controller (1.07) to the newest versions.
- Swapped the new larger drive into the laptop.
Worked perfectly! Cloning over USB1.1 took 10hrs though.
