Display shuts off but computer stays on
Display shuts off but computer stays on
T30 display shuts off in approximately 5 minutes after start up but the computer stays on till turned off. Reboot, and everything is fine for another 5 minutes. I put in a new hard drive to see if I get a different result, but no such luck .Any ideas or thoughts on the culprit
Re: Display shuts off but computer stays on
Is the screen saver set to blank the screen in 5 minutes? Or power settings set to shut monitor off in 5 minutes? Those are some software possibilities.
On the hardware side, the inverter could be weak, but more likely the CCFL is about to fail completely.

Re: Display shuts off but computer stays on
I set the screen saver as well as the power settings to default. I even changed the inverter. Everything appeared to have been corrected last night. but this morning it is back to acting up again
Re: Display shuts off but computer stays on
Does the problem occur on an externally attached LCD?
Re: Display shuts off but computer stays on
yes it does. when the compter is turned on the IBM spash screen flashes for 1/2 second and then everything is black

Probably your CPU is overheating, and shuts the laptop off.
Remove the CPU-fan, clean off the old gunk, blow out all the dust bunnies, and apply fresh Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste.
Plenty posts here with the HOW-TO.

RBS, I would have recommended the same, but the OP says that only the LCD blanks out. The machine does not power down. Still could be heat, but GPU related not CPU. My guess here is a bad GPU on the systemboard.

I wasn't half awake yet when I made the post.
It being a T30, Harryc is right, prepare for an imminent demise of your T30

Re: Display shuts off but computer stays on
well gentlemen. After following thru with all your suggestions when I shut the computer down last night I heard 1 3 3 1 beeps which meant the motherboard is ok. So took out a 256 ram chip from my HP laptop and put it in and wala. Apparently the memory stick was no good. It now loads windows just fine. This morning I noticed a different probem. the computer freezes. I tried to run the pc doctor but half way thru it stopped responding. Any ideas, pleasse.

The above-mentioned GPU comes to mind as the likely culprit...

Why is my P1 Gen 7 so much better on battery? Cool, quiet, fast — but not on AC.
