Best performing Hard Drive
Best performing Hard Drive
I have seen alot of the 80gb 7200rpm (Travelstar 7K100) hard drives for sale on ebay for about $150. I have also seen the slower rpm version of the 80gb for about twice the price. Is the Travelstar 7K100 not as high-performance as it would seem? I'm looking for the best performing (and reliable) hard drive 60gb or larger for my T30. Any insight?
The 7k100 80g is availabe at ZipZoomFly for about the same price, shipped ( http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDe ... e=100524-2 )
The 5k100 80g is significantly cheaper ( http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDe ... e=100524-1 )
If people are asking more for the 5k100 than the 7k100 on eBay they either aren't selling many or the purchasers are overpaying.
The 7K100 will be faster than the 5K100. Whether the difference in speed justifies the difference in price depends.
This question comes up on a regular basis. Different people have different opinions. Search the posts here for "7K60" or "7K100" to read a plethora of available comments

I used to be an anarchist but I quit because there were too many rules
I would note that every review I've read has the Samsung 7200.1 at the same performance+power use as the travelstar 7k100. It's also significantly (20%?) more expensive.
It's also waaay quieter. I finally decided to go with the Samsung despite the price diff, because of that issue. I can't say I've heard a 7k100, but I can tell you this Samsung is pretty much completely silent when accessing, way quieter than the 20 gig travelstar that came with my t22.
