T30 Power button failing: not!

#1 Post by portsample » Wed Nov 24, 2010 11:44 am

Hey all-

I've got a T30 that I've had since new. Towards the end of its regular use, the power button started requiring multiple presses in order to get it to turn the laptop on. I'd assumed that it was the switch in the button failing and so yesterday installed a new keyboard w/integrated power button. The problem is still there, it takes dozens of presses to get one that turns the laptop on. The laptop will however turn on just fine when in a docking station.

Dang it. Is there a solution to this problem that does not require a motherboard swap out? TIA for wisdom and insight.

You might have some dirt in the keyboard connector on the motherboard.
Try a can of compressed air.

But I actually prefer Murphy's from Cork!

Or some cleaner that is made for electricians. They are safe for electronic parts.

If it is really going dead, if you don't want to open it up to clean it, you can use a port replicator. I always use one for my T30 when I use it on the desk.

When it's in the docking station do you press the PC's button or the one on the docking station? I ask because I use a docking station too and always press my PC's on button and I get that sluggish response every once in a while.

Use the dock's power button. If it doesn't have the sluggish issue, then you know for sure that the button on your laptop has some issue, mostly likely just dust or grease that causes bad contact.
