T60/T61 RAM Compatibility Question with DDR2 Modules Above 2GB
T60/T61 RAM Compatibility Question with DDR2 Modules Above 2GB
Hi everyone, I’m trying to upgrade my ThinkPad T61 with more RAM. I currently have 2×1GB DDR2 sticks installed, and I’m considering using 2×2GB DDR2 modules to max out the memory. Has anyone tried running 2GB DDR2 modules on a T60 or T61? Are there any stability issues, BIOS limitations, or specific module brands I should be aware of before buying?

Re: T60/T61 RAM Compatibility Question with DDR2 Modules Above 2GB
1GB and 2GB DDR2 modules will work on all T60 and T61.
T60 maxes out at 2 x 2GB, of which about 3.25GB is usable, any bigger modules won't work.
T61 can also use 2 x 4GB DDR2 modules.
No limitations or issues when you buy well-known brands.

Memory speed: you want either PC2-5300 or PC2-6400. Both T60 and T61 will run just fine with different sized sticks of RAM (1gb and 2gb, for instance).annawonka wrote: ↑Wed Nov 12, 2025 11:43 pmHi everyone, I’m trying to upgrade my ThinkPad T61 with more RAM. On a T60, you'll have zero problems with 2x2gb sticks, but due to hardware limitations, even in a 64 bit OS you'll only be able to access 3gb. Some people install 3gb (one stick each of 1gb and 2gb) to max out the RAM without wasting money.
On a T61, the maximum is 8gb, but expect to pay dearly for 4gb sticks (last time I checked they were $40 each, compared to less than $10 for 2gb sticks). One 4gb stick plus one 2gb stick is a more affordable option if 2x 2gb isn't enough for your needs.
