CPU-Z shows only only one core on T60
CPU-Z shows only only one core on T60
My T60 (Model 2623D3U with a Core Duo T2500) shows only one core in CPU-Z.
The BIOS (2.16) is the most recent one posted on the Lenovo support page and is enabled for a dual core. The hardware device manager shows two processors. The motherboard is rev. 3
If the T60 is operating properly--and it strikes me as very slow, especially in multitasking--should CPU-Z show two cores?

This sounds like a CPU-z problem. Try PC Wizard 2007.

ThinkPad T60p T7600 4 GB RAM 320 GB 7200 RPM HD Vista Ultimate Service Pack 2 5.1 4.7 4.2 4.6 5.8Thanks for the responses. As I suspected, I do have a problem.
To DAH, thanks for posting your CPU-Z screenshot. I do not see what you see. On my computer, CPU-Z shows only one core at the bottom of the screen, not two as in your screenshot.
To Harryc, thanks for the PCWizard recommendation. It shows two cores, but one of them only operates at 0% regardless of the load I put on the processor or the number of programs I am running.
In searching the threads on this forum, I noted one that implied that the HAL could cause problems with the CPU. Is that something on which I should follow up, or do you have other suggestions?

Dale2, what OS are you running? I remember the early version of Windows XP (can't remember if it's pre-SP2 or pre-SP1) does not show both cores in the task manager.

Just a shot in the dark here but, did you upgrade the cpu using an engineering sample? there have been issues with engineering samples.
symptoms include ; locked core low multiplier, missing features such as speedstep, virtualization, only one core enabled.
Engineering samples used to represent top grade, cream of the crop cpus sent to overclockers / reviewers. recently many have been showing defects instead.

Maybe you need to install the Common Microsoft Windows XP update modules.
You should also make sure you have the latest Intel Chipset drivers.
Edit: I see you already are using the latest BIOS version.

Even in task manager in the performance tab, you should have 2 cpu history...Dale2 wrote:My T60 (Model 2623D3U with a Core Duo T2500) shows only one core in CPU-Z.

Is it a brand new T60 and did it always have this issue ? One day, we got at office a Core 2 Duo for desktop with only one core working. We send it back. But it's very very uncommon !!!

Dale2, have you figured anything out?Dale2 wrote:Thanks for the questions. I am running Windows XP (upgraded to SP2) with the original processor. There has been no hardware changes to this laptop.
Perplexing, isn't it? I think that I have a software problem somewhere.
I'm having the same problem on my work T60 (as is my coworker), but my personal T60p is fine. (All are running WinXP SP2).

To close off this thread, it turned out that my IT department imaged the drive with the company software before they gave it to me. It appears that the software in the image, which I presume was designed for the T4x series, does not support dual cores. (Apparently something to do with the HAL.)
Now that we think we know the problem, I have been promised a solution. I don't know if we can fix this without reinstalling Windows XP.

Unfortunately there is now way to fix it without reinstalling Windows. WinXP does not support changing the HAL to a multiprocessor CPU ACPI without a re-install. See my post here for some links:Dale2 wrote:To close off this thread, it turned out that my IT department imaged the drive with the company software before they gave it to me. Re: CPU-Z shows only only one core on T60
Even the solution comes ages late here it is for the people who have the same issue and want to fix it without a full reinstall of XP.
As the the problem was identified as being the HAL (hal*.dll) Winxp is installed with, is for uniprocessor instead of multiprocessor (especially from older disk rescue sets from T4xx or any other rescue disk sets created for uniprocessor machines) so further searches on internet lead me to the solution. Easy as 1, 2, 3.

Good luck!
