Thinkpad X31 Intel Pro Wireless 2200 BG

Hi there, my X31 came with no Wi-Fi card so I bought a Siemens Gigaset PCMCIA card for it which runs great!

Recently I found an Intel PRO/Wireless 2200 B/G. I've did some research and found this thread: /viewtopic.php?f=3&t=91702

People say it's compatible but I need an IBM FRU model just to be sure. Do I need a bios update? My X31 has bios version 2.11 but I don't have a dock station in case I really need a bios update as I've seen I can't use a USB DVD drive.

Download the X31 manual from the HMM link above.
It has all the FRU numbers in it, incl. that card.

tawbook.pdf under x31 2672 gives FRU 73P2801 for Intel PRO/Wireless
2200BG mini-PCI

most recent bios version is 3.02 embedded controller 1.08 my copies are
on floppies, so no CD drive needed if you have a floppy drive.

I've just been told by the seller it's an Intel Pro 2100 Wm3a2100 Mini-pci and not an Intel Pro Wireless 2200 B/G and he doesn't know about IBM FRU numbers xD

I don't have a floppy drive either.

If you will take out the whitelist from your BIOS, I recommend to use completely different WLAN card. In my X41t, I'm using 300Mbps Atheros like this one - https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Atheros ... st=ae803_4.
I have Exactly this same model of card and works fine under both windows XP and Linux. With SSD and B_sel0 mods runs brilliant.

(If the auction/offer gone, model of chip on the card is Atheros AR9160)

Last word. If you will be able to find cards based on AR9220 chip, take it. 9160 is very stable but 9220 is a lot better card which is more stable even when range is low.
