What is a recommended usage for the mSATA slot?

#1 Post by lmm0312tpforum » Fri Apr 04, 2025 8:19 am

I recently acquired a used X220 and I am in the process of refurbishing it . Anyway, it came with an mSATA SSD (256 GB) in place of the WWAN. The WWAN is also available, but only the mSATA is installed. I am curious, what is the used of mSATA as of today? I primarily use Linux, so there is no need for a 2nd drive to dual boot. Even so, what do you use that driver for? TimeShift? Root file system?

Appreciate any inputs.

Welcome to the Forum.
Obviously an SSD there can be used for data storage or a second OS.

But I actually prefer Murphy's from Cork!

i like allocating page file/swap space to a 2nd drive. This helps lots if main drive is a spinner.

It's better to install the OS on the mSATA SSD itself. I did that on my SSD until the 60GB(!!) mSATA SSD died after 5 years.
