Thinkpad T510 - NVIDIA issue

#1 Post by madhu » Mon Nov 22, 2021 8:12 am

Hello All

I have thinkpad T510, which was my daily driver until a few days back; during a window 10 update process, the computer crashed and all I got was a black screen after restart.

a) I reinstalled Window 10 from scratch , but the laptop display goes dark and does not come back when NVIDIA OPTIMUS is chosen in the BIOS.
I assumed it was a drivers issue and tried installing the NVIDIA 3100 drive from Lenovo site (T510 EOL site), I get a "NVIDIA Installer cannot continue - "The graphics driver could not fund compatible graphics hardware" error.
I tried to install the driver from NVIDIA site - same error

It works fine if I chose Integrated Graphics (but connection to external monitor does not work)

b) As an extreme step, I recovered the machine using thinkpad T510 recovery CD's I had (Windows XP) hoping that all the drivers would get installed.
Laptop is working fine with Integrated Graphics but when I choose optimus in the BIOS, the laptop is stuck at "the "Starting Windows" logo.

Are there any other steps I can try to get this laptop back ?

Is there any way to check if graphics chip is damaged ?

Thanks in advance
