Desperate to test MC8355 modem in T420

I've been asking around in various forums for the last couple of months about how to check the status of the Sierra MC8355 modem in my T420 and no one seems to know. Apparently you can check things using Hayes AT commands in a terminal session but I have had no success in trying this so far.

If anyone has been successful doing this, I'd appreciate some help in doing this.

I have exchanged numerous emails with Sierra's support team, but they appear to be clueless or totally disinterested in helping.

Maybe look for a different card, like Ericsson F5521gw?
