ultrabay drive problems

#1 Post by T410 » Fri Aug 15, 2025 11:07 am

I was having a problem on my T410 where the ultrabay hard drive would connect and disconnect, and the NTFS partition simply would not work at all, while the EXT4 part would sometimes work. Thought it was a drive problem but it did the same thing in my T430. Prior to this problem developing I had used that ultrabay drive for years with no issues.

Well now my T410 is dead, but I am having a similar issue using the ultrabay in my T430, using a completely different hard drive. It will make a squeak noise and then the ultrabay drive vanishes. I've tried it with 2 drives now on the 430 and the same thing happens. Are all of my drives borked, is my ultrabay tray borked (it looks fine) or what?

I use Linux mint.

Try a different tray-- even generic ones will work since Serial Ultrabay uses the standard optical drive SATA connector (unlike the proprietary connector of the T4x/T6x Ultrabay).
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch
Impulse Buy: Thinkpad not named for safety reasons

Actually I think my tray is a generic one.
