R50 1830 CPU

#1 Post by Opabinia1 » Fri Mar 07, 2025 6:16 pm

Hi everyone! This is my first time posting here, but I recently dusted off my old R50 1830, and thought it would be a fun project to try and upgrade it as much as possible (preferably without turning it into the ship of Theseus). I upgraded the RAM from 512 MB to 2048 MB without issue, and it became significantly faster than before, but I figured I could do more to upgrade it. I found this post (viewtopic.php?t=128453) with a comment that had a list of all compatible CPUs, and was wondering if this is correct. I purchased the M735 (SL7EP) and installed it into my TP, but now it won't power on. The CPU is heating up, and the disk is spinning, but nothing shows up on the screen. I looked up the specs of the CPU in question, and this site (https://www.techpowerup.com/cpu-specs/p ... m-735.c155) said it needs DDR2 memory, but my R50 only has DDR. I wanted to clarify what is correct as I've seen conflicting information, and also if there is anything I can do to see if the CPU I bought was a bad unit. Thank you in advance :) .

R50 needs DDR memory.
That M735 CPU may support DDR2, but the R50 does NOT.
Try that new CPU with your old RAM to find out which one is the sinner: CPU or RAM.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
But I actually prefer Murphy's from Cork!

Put back the original processor. If it boots, then it means that the new processor is probably a dud. :x
(Or maybe you need a BIOS update?)

If it still doesn't boot, then the new processor is a dud and actually fried your laptop. :evil:

@RBS

You're forgetting something: Intel processors before the Core i series don't have a built-in memory controller.
RAM is handled by the northbridge chip, in the R50 that's the 855PM chipset which only supports DDR1.
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch
Impulse Buy: Thinkpad not named for safety reasons :lol:
