Safe CPU and GPU Tempuratures for ThinkPad R61
Safe CPU and GPU Tempuratures for ThinkPad R61
Hello!
I've recently acquired a ThinkPad R61 with a Core 2 Duo T7500 and Nvidia NVS 140M graphics and I'm wondering what temps I should expect. I did take this laptop apart and rethermal-pasted it with some Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut Extreme once I verified it was fully functional and installed Tiny 10.
Now the only laptops I've used that are around this Thinkpad's age was some sort of Sony using an x9100 with 9600m gt graphics and an Aspire 9805; both of those laptops operated cooler than this one with worse thermal paste but had bigger heatsinks.
So I'm trying to figure out if my Thinkpad hitting 77C on the CPU and 79C on the GPU under full load with the fan manually set to max speed is normal, the NVS 140M is just a small low-power dedicated GPU so these temps seemed high, however, it was only 18C hotter compared to it Idling in Windows. I know that this GPU suffers from bumpgate which is why I'm worried about its temp, it's only 5C lower than what my 9600M GT would hit under full load!
And if anyone has any tips for me related to the temps or not please let me know, I'm kind of in new territory with this ThinkPad and would prefer if it didn't die within a day like my Aspire 9805 did!

Re: Safe CPU and GPU Tempuratures for ThinkPad R61
Welcome to the Forum.
How often do people run their laptop under full load?
FYI: temps in that range are very good for an R61, often they are closer to 90 C or more!
Also, T7500 isn't exactly known as a 'cool' CPU.
You may want to upgrade it to a cooler running T8300 or T9300.
But before you do that, you need to first install Middleton's BIOS.
Make sure to get the correct version!
If you still find temps too high, you can always apply PTM7950 thermal pads instead of paste.
You can get the R61 manual from the HMM link above.

Re: Safe CPU and GPU Tempuratures for ThinkPad R61
Alright good to know the temps are OK, and since it's running Windows 10 albeit a cut-down version, the CPU is constantly under 50% load and will go up to 100% often.
I kind of wish I knew about that bios before I ended up buying myself an X7900, then I could've bought an X9100.
Any way to get any of the quad-core cpus to work? Bought a QX9300 a while back for my Viao but it wasn't compatible so the CPU has become a nice paper weight.
I've also just noticed this laptop is restarting randomly and sometimes giving me a driver irql not less or equal error, should I be worried?

Ummm, yes? Because that means it's not running stable and you won't be able to use it properly.
Run a memory test like Memtest86+ to check if the RAM is still OK.

R60/R61 are the cheaper versions of the T60/T61 series.
Better start reading up on other fora (=forums for the plebs) such as the ThinkPad T60/T61 Series.
You'd find stuff like Running an Intel X9100 in T601 frankenpad without hardware mod?
