R61 powers on, but won’t boot.

#1 Post by kid_b » Tue Feb 18, 2025 9:24 pm

Hello, a month ago I purchased a thinkpad r61 in good condition. I was initially able to use it without any issues or problems. However, when I tried to replace the cpu from a Celeron 540 with a T7500 the LEDs turned on but there was no display. More notably the fan would start spinning for a few seconds then stop. I already tried taking out/switching the RAM around, resetting the CMOS, tried putting back the original CPU in, and also tried seeing if there was any display from a monitor. I also bought a motherboard replacement with the same specs with no luck. I really don’t know what else to do after trying all the other methods, I feel at this point the laptop is a goner.

Advice on how to approach this would be much appreciated, thank you.

Power on the laptop without any RAM installed. If you get the 1-3-3-1 error beep code (1 beep, pause, 3 beeps, pause, 3 beeps, pause, 1 beep), then it means the system board is starting up and running POST (power on self test). If not, then it means that the problem is severe.
