Thinkpad A31 randomly powering off
Last night while using my A31, it shut off and showed no signs of life despite me trying different things to try to get it to work. This morning i decided to attempt to power it on and the first power up, it worked, but instead of the ibm logo at boot, there were vertical red, blue and green lines on the screen. On the second try, it finally worked except the fact it shut down after around 20 minutes of use. I have not been able to power it on since. Any help or comments are much appreciated, thanks in advance!
Some extra info:
i currently do not have a battery inserted due to me dissasembling my pack before new 18650 cells being delayed in shipping.
i have been using it almost everyday for the past week or two.
it has never behaved in this way prior to last night.
have not done anything cpu or gpu intensive recently

Is your thermal paste in good shape? Does your heatsink make effective contact with the die? Maybe is a thermal issue activating the protections, but i can be wrong.
Re: Thinkpad A31 randomly powering off
The vertical lines in the display would make me lean toward a GPU failure. When you say the device is unable to power on, do you mean there is absolutely no indication of power getting to the machine whatsoever, or that it's not displaying video? Do you get fan spin?

Just replaced thermal paste about a month before this problem surfacedGonzaleitor wrote: ↑Fri Aug 29, 2025 3:16 pmIs your thermal paste in good shape? Does your heatsink make effective contact with the die? Maybe is a thermal issue activating the protections, but i can be wrong.
No fans no power led nothing, and it has seemed to pop a cap on my power supply although it was well rested for the system and worked fine beforehandNycto wrote: ↑Fri Aug 29, 2025 10:15 pmThe vertical lines in the display would make me lean toward a GPU failure. Sorry for taking so long to reply to everyone, I just got sidetracked and pushed this to the side so I finally picked this back up and still need help with this problem as it hasn't been fixed yet
