Ripping my DVD/Blu-Rays to a external Drive

I've been going through my DVDs and Blu-Rays and BD are better made discs but I do have a few DVDs that are getting the small hair crack from the center of the disc. I did fix them with adding crazy glue on the crack on both sides of the disc but being plastic it will bend when removing and re putting back in its case. I like having my physical copies of my movies and shows and the best I can think of is ripping all my DVDs for the time being (Blu-Rays later on). I still want to watch on my Tv with remote and not on the PC. My Sony Blu-Ray player has a USB port on the front. Can it read external HDDs for videos? I imagine the USB port is for flash drives that have video clips on it. The Blu-Ray player has the same style interface as the PS3 main screen. Also what is the largest TB HDD now? I've seen some 6TB so far. and what is better, a WD Passport or WD MyBook. Passport is the laptop drive and the MyBook is the desktop Drive

I believe that one of the major problems with trying to connect an external hard drive via the Blu-ray player's USB port is that it may lack the necessary power (i.e., maximum current capability) for the HD. I suggest contacting Sony's technical support, reading your product's manual or posting the question on a Sony forum. They will probably have a better idea if what you suggest will work.

Well I just bought a WD My Book 4TB and connected to my ThinkCentre M82 USB 3.0 port and it installs the driver but then it isn't showing up in my computer. I did a restart and reconnected the drive and still nothing. I decided to put in my Windows 7 install disc to maybe format the drive and when I get to the drive selection it shows 0GB out of 0GB and cannot do any formatting. I then plugged the drive into my ThinkPad T420 and it tried to install the driver but still failed. So either the drive is dead or it was a return. The WD My Book is a mini clone look a like of the first gen XBOX One and I noticed there was finger prints on the gloss as it was open before. The box did have a security spider on it so it was bought and then returned is my guess.

This is my 2nd WD drive that I bought and failed to read. I bought this one from walmart this time as the internal WD drive I bought was from BestBuy. Not many options around me to buy drives other then online, witch takes time and risk getting damaged/lost during shipping. Staples is another option for in person buying.

WD was my best lasting drives to go to as Seagate I would get a few years from before clicking and IBM TravelStar and Maxtor drives were just bad for me. Not sure how Seagates are now today. The only options at the store was Seagate or WD and 4TB was the largest I could get.

I can confirm that it was used. There is scuffs on the case and prints on the gloss and was thinking that most all new electronics with gloss come with that clear cover tape on it and when looking for a driver CD in the box I found the clear tape laying on the bottom of box crumbled up. And to think of it, I didn't take notice but the AC Adapter and USB cable were not rolled up as it meant to be New. So Walmart must of put it back on the shelf as New again when it was returned probably of the same problem I'm having from the last buyer.

I returned the drive and got my money back.

I think my DVD player laser maybe getting bad or something. I just rebought 2 seasons of my show I was watching due to the discs having weird swirl dye in the discs thinking it was that and these are brand new never opened "bought new and been sitting sealed". One disc the player would say disc is dirty. I opened the tray and looked at the disc and it is a good clean disc. So I put the disc in my desktop and watch the full episode that it was stuttering on and there was no stuttering on watching it on the desktop. I re put the disc back in the player and it would stutter again.


I opened up the casing of the player and cleaned out some hair that was around the lens that I can see and still didn't do anything. The player is a Sony DVP-SR510H with HDMI out. I don't know if the laser is getting weak or not.

I bought a new same DVD player and not even a week the drive is doing the same thing with the skipping of the discs. It seems sony is getting cheap on their DVD players. I'll probably have to send this back soon then. Except for my PCs all my media hardware is Sony. Tv, DVD player, Blu-Ray player, VCR, PlayStation, headphones, digital camera, music, even a clock I have says sony. I bought a lot of there hardware because it was reliable.

I checked the back of my old player and it says manufactured 2012. The new one says 2017.
I checked the player and it is not hot, discs are like brand new. I don't mind using the blu-ray player but it is really slow and has a menu interface where my DVD player is just put the disc in and it loads up fast and easy, no menu or loading.

Maybe you should tell us the Sony model-number, so that other people will not make the same mistake?

I have a Sony BDPS3700 that I'm quite satisfied with. It does have a fast start feature offered in the menu area.

SONY CD/DVD PLAYER DVP-SR510H

I think this is the last of Sony DVD players as When I bought this one back in 2012 and went on there site to see if there is a new model, they are still selling the same model.

The one I have is HDMI out and the other model they have on there site is just a composite out with no HDMI with progressive scan.

Well I just bought a Sony BDP-S1700 at the store. Going to try it out and it is half the size of my current DVD player. The power is a AC adapter and not built into the player, so that may help if it is that component part getting hot. I read somewhere online that heat maybe the problem for the players cause of skipping.
