DVD choppy with 770z, need DEVA?? Advice needed.
Hi--
I recently was given a 770z (I have a newer desktop for regular use...this is mainly for typing papers when i'm at the library).
...But then I realized i could purchas a dvd drive for my thinkpad, so I went for it....I bought a dvd drive on ebay and now I realize my video card sucks (trident 3d excelerator dvd or something). I thought the 'dvd' in the discription ment it could handle dvds...guess i was very wrong!
I did some research and saw I could purchase a enhanced video display card (on ebay they go for approx $30).
machine specs: PII 366, 128 mb ram, 12 gig hd, windows 2000
Will the DEVA help my dvd playback? It's very, very choppy. Also if i order a bare DEVA IBM only offers MPEG installs to go with it. Is this sufficient.
Sorry for the long post. Thank you for any help in advance.

Definitely get the DEVA card. I have a 770x with a 400Mhz PII and it's choppy without it. With it it plays great. My 770ed plays DVDs fine with a 266Mhz PII and DEVA card.
I bought mine on ebay for $35 shipped, best money I've spent thus far on this machine. Depending on what OS you have the software installation will run from simple to a little convoluted but well worth the effort.

With Xp,you just use the W2K Mpeg files(click continue anyway, when error pops up),and use Windows media player....
Same with W2K...
If you have 95\98\ME use the DVDExpress that was installed when new, which is so very nicely provided to us from Bill Morrow's FTP site..!!!
http://www.thinkpads.com/ftp_resource.htm It's right down on the bottom...now this way is picky in the order you install everything....I THINK it was install the newest Video Features(see IBM link below)...then the DVDExpress from Bill's site...then the DVDExpress update from the IBM site http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... SHY-3PGT93 ...then the Mpeg Features.....I THINK !!!!....never used 98,always used XP Pro....
Have fun..!!!
