Thinkpad 600E Sound Only Doesn't Work in DOS

#1 Post by dcfbf » Thu Jun 20, 2024 10:07 pm

Hi I recently got a Thinkpad 600E that I installed Windows 98 Second Edition on and I am trying to play dos games.

Since I am very new to dos and windows 9x, I am not sure how I would get sound drivers to work. For example, in Doom, only sound effects work but in other games, no sound works at all.

I have already tried:
  • all the windows 98 drivers in the driver repository on this website and also the newest soundfusion drivers for the sound card but the same problem is still occurring.
  • ps2 midi enable and when I do: ps2 ? midi it says that it is enabled.
  • using the setup tool with the dos games to choose which sound card I have and the MIDI port. Though when I did it in Doom it never seemed to save my configuration. Like every time I launched the setup, it always showed none for the music
(I don't know if that means anything but that might be important to figuring this out)
  • using control panel to choose the midi output and none of them work.
  • booting into dos mode and messing with cwdinit. Though I probably didn't do much because I didn't know how to use it like when I did anything. It would just sorta freeze there showing the Port and the DMA and seemingly not do anything. I would just restart after a minute of waiting (is that bad?)
  • Reinstalling windows

This is what makes me very confused because midi playback and everything else works in windows but it doesn't work in dos.

Do I need to install separate dos drivers?

I haven't tried messing with the IRQs and the DMAs or changing the MIDI ports so do I need to do anything with them?

Do I need to downgrade to windows 98 First Edition? if so, what USB drivers should I use?

I'm open to any suggestions to help fix this problem because I am completely stuck on what to do.

Ah yes I did see that one. I wasn't sure if I should have replied to that post since it was from 3 years ago, but I'm not too sure how to check if it is in Plug and Play mode or how to not use the defined address

Ok so eventually I figured out what the instructions meant in the Thinkpad 600 ms-dos sound problem thread.

So I found out how to check if it is in plug and play mode by just going into device manager and sorting by connection type.

Then I found out what not using a defined address meant for DMA and IRQ. It just means that I shouldn't have any other devices using the same DMA and IRQ values. (Which I didn't)

So when It still didn't work, I did a little more digging and I found out that my version of doom that I was using was just sorta broken in that it never saved my configurations for some reason. So whenever I would set a sound card, it would just not save and I would have no sound. I found this out when I tried another copy of doom and sound works perfectly now
