SelectaDock I (3457-001) questions

#1 Post by brianboyracer » Tue Aug 13, 2024 10:32 am

Hi all, sometime ago I acquired a vintage SelectaDock I (3547-001) and I've finally got around to testing it with a few Thinkpads, below are my results. I'd be keen to know any other users experiences. Surprisingly there appears very little info online or this forum regarding SelectaDock I, just the HMM. My testing showed:-

1 x Thinkpad 760XD; combined with its SelectaBase (SaB) Model I connects and works absolutely fine
But;
2 x Thinkpad 770X; with SaB 770 a very high pitched continuous beep upon power on. No post/blank screen but can hear what I think is the HDD spinning
1 x Thinkpad 600E; with SaB 600, as per 770X
1 x Thinkpad 600X; with SaB 600, as per 770X

Therefore I am speculating that perhaps the SelectaDock I (SaD1) is not meant to work with the 770 or 600 series? The above 770s/600s do work fine in my SaD3. The thinkwiki SaD1 page says it does work with 770/600 series. Has anyone ever got a TP 770 or 600 working with a SaD1, if so was there anything specific you did or I need to look out for?

Also the SaD1 comes with 1 x shared ISA and PCI slot. What I don't have for my SaD1 is the 'Option Card Cover' (P/N 39H7423) this provides a mount and cover for any installed PCI/ISA card, without this the card hangs loose. I wondered if the 'Option Card Cover' was not included as standard with the SaD1 and you had to purchase separately? Cheers Brian

Hi, I think so, that it was not included. I have two docks and both have a plastic that is cowering the back part (slots) if I remove the plastic and put that Card Cover (I have only one) there and screw it in place it is holding the card and making the dock much bigger :D I can make a picture if you want.

Hi Misu, sorry for late reply. If you could by any chance upload a picture of the attachment and also fitted to the SaD that’d be great. I don’t think such pictures exist at all in the wild, well I can’t find any! IAlso what Thinkpad have you used SaD 1 with?

This says the 770 should work with the correct SelectaBase:

Maybe your SelectaBase 770 is defective?

Or more likely my SaD 1 is defective? Both my SelectaBase 600 and 770 work fine on the SaD3. Hence keen to know if anyone has had any success running a TP600 or 770 on a SaD1?

Hi,

I am not so fast with replying, neither. I will try to dig it out from my storage and take some photos. To get 600 and 770 series working, you have to connect SelectADock to the power (of course) AND also use normal laptop power adapter connected to rear part of SelectABase. That will do the magic. :) Underpowered SaD is so sad, that it is beeping for extra power. It is normal behaviour.
