Thinkpad X1 Hybrid questions

#1 Post by FryPpy » Tue Jun 25, 2019 5:40 am

For me Thinkpad X1 (OG) is not common as its Carbon brothers... but Hybrid model is rareity.
X1 is Thinkpad so it can be tinkerd some way (even motherboard can be swapped;). But what we know about Hybrid?

As i can understand Hybrid is a normal X1 with added IMM (Instant Media Mode) card instead WWAN module. IMM is a small computer with it's own CPU (ARM based). Primary gaol of IMM is power saving and ability to run Android (?) OS instead of Windows.

So my the questions for X1 Hybrid:
Can be IMM (and cables) plugged in common X1 turning it into X1 hybrid?
Have the IMM WWAN capabilities? And if yes can be IMM card used as WWAN modem in Windows OS?
In HMM it is we can read "Disconnect the WLAN cable", but it have notice "Plug the red cable into IMM card jack". On thinkpads red cable is the main WWAN antenna.
Can be LCD screen swapped for better resolution in X1 and X1 hybrid?

I haven't find any topics about X1 Hybrid here (on TPF). Is there are any X1 hybrid owners here?

Good luck!
I will need it;)

I can't find any hybrid models on sale now (on local market or ebay).
Only one that sits on ebay is very strange (NOT MY UNIT AND IT IS NOT AN ADVERTISEMENT).
It have designation "X1 hybrid" on screen bezel but it have MTM = 1291-26U. And MTM lookup say that it is common X1 (OG). Moreover i have seen more 1291-26U units without "X1 hybrid" designation.

So the only way to try it out is frankenpadding. The possibility of building hybrid from common X1 (OG) is a question in my first post. Anyway i'll try it. In worst case i will have common X1 (OG) and spare IMM card.
Placing WTB post in local marketplace forum i think is nogo, sine no X1 Hybrid owners have answered here.(

Addendum.
Ordered needed parts in all corners of a world. In a couple of weenks we'll see what it is X1 Hybrid FrnakenPad;)
Other question arising: X1 OG i've got, have no HDD and without IMM card. Putting HDD in and installing Win7 is not big deal. But installing Android in Hybrid environment;) Have downloaded all stuff from Lenovo server... and discovered that they have built only Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) in 2012... I have strange feeling that ThinkPad X1 Hybrid was AbandoonedPad.

Hi,

I have an X1 Hybrid, the Model is 12862JU. What is interesting is that the model for sale on Ebay is listed on Encompass.com as an X1 Hybrid, but my model is listed as just an X1.

Mine was sent to me with no OS and I installed Win 8.1. I don't have any restore discs for it and I believe that the restore discs are needed in order to enable Linux. In device manager, mine has a missing base system device and there are no drivers available for it anywhere.

On Encompass, there is listed a part for mine, 004W3275, Lenovo FRU Instant Media Card NI1.1 and it is not listed for the model listed on Ebay.

I am very interested in what you find out digging into yours.

Regards,
Dave

You an try to contact ThinkPad, to see if you can buy a set of Recovery Disks for this older X1 Hybrid model.

It's a long shot considering how long ago this model had been around (since 2011 ??).

I did try that, no luck. I even tried some back channels with some contacts I have there.

Eventually, Windows 10 is going on this and it will be donated to someone who needs a good running laptop or a kid who can't afford one.

Sometimes I keep the interesting ones around and play with them awhile before I hand them off, this was one of those.

If you check the 1286-2JU with our above MTM link, you get both an X1 and an X1-Hybrid: http://tp.krelay.de/index.php?type=1286-2ju

AFAIK the X1-Hybrid only came with all versions of W7 Recovery disks:
04T4012 = Russian W7-Pro/SP1 64-bit
04T4018 = English W7-Pro/SP1 64-bit
For Europe and Russia, try and get them here: https://www.medion.com/lenovoserviceshop/welcome

Interesting, how 2 different models may have one MTM??? May be this is a hint that X1 and X1 Hybrid are almost indistinguishable?

Somewhere on the net, it was noted that Hybrid model was launched with delay after X1 (OG) model (??2012??).

I have seen 2 lots on ebay with X1 (OG) with touchscreen (2 finger touch) (but ThinkWiki states that there are no touchscreen X1 models). Interesting, have any X1 Hybrid touch screen?

You can try this path. Go to support.lenovo.com -> laptops ->Drivers download. Search for X1 Hybrud Laptop. Deselect any OS selected. And under "Software and utilites" you can find:
Lenovo Instant Media Mode - Switch Manager
(i think this is windows app to switch to linux environment. BAD THING - it is denoted as Microsoft Windows 7, 64-bit in 8mlf61ww.txt)
AND
Instant Media Mode Image for Google Android 2.3
(this is Linux / Android OS image to be installed in IMM to be switched to).

You can try this out while my parts are shipping to me;)

Hi all,

Thanks for all the links, my Win. updates are a little behind. I am getting caught up with them before I try anything else.

I'm not very keen on having Android 3.2 runnning although it would have been nice to see this machine fully functional, so I am probably staying with the plan on putting 10 on it and donating it.

First try and... fail:(
Got:
X1 (OG) - 1286-CTO with i7 - shabby, no touch screen, no HDD, battery is dead.
IMM card - 04W3275
Cable kit for X1 Hybrid - 04W3274.
Disassembled and cleaned Thinkpad. Find socket for special cable 50.4N408.001 (from cable kit).
Connected, assembled, Installed Windows 7 x64 + all software for IMM and NoGo.

What i have discowered so far:
"Switch manager" (8MLF61WW) - the software to switch to Android from Windows is zip archive that have both x64 and x86 installers.
"Instant Media Mode Firmware Update" (8MLE12WW) - is Android tools and drivers, and Android image. The image in this package is the same as "Instant Media Mode Image" (8MLD45WW)

"Switch manager" say: "Instant Media Mode Unavailable".
Adb utility from "Instant Media Mode Firmware Update" say "device not found".
Driver in "Instant Media Mode Firmware Update" package have entries for some Android smartphones and for Lenovo something as USB device VID_17EF PID_7409.
Google didn't know what it is.
IMM card have traces (PCB paths) connected to USB signals in min-PCI express socket, but neither Windows, nor Linux see any USB device (other than WebCam, FingerPrint reader and bluetooth).
I have checked min-PCI express socket with spare WWAN card and it have been discovered as USB device by Windows.
Have checked IMM card in T410 - have not added any USB device.

Intermediate CONCLUSION:
My IMM card is DEAD:(
Probably IMM can be stated from any Windows OS - not only Win 7 x64.

ADDITION ~~~~~~~~~12.09.2019~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Not so bad, it's alive ALIVE.
After installing IMM in BIOS setup appeared addition menu entry:
Security -> Instant Media Mode -> Disabled => Enabled
And IMM appeared in Windows and Linux OS.
For common use it is 12Gb flash drive to exchange files between Windows And Android OS but can be used as general purpose storage.
In Android OS sometimes trackpoint hangs up so i can't return back to Windows OS without hard reboot.
Android OS image for IMM from Lenovo have fix for this bug.
After some cycles of disassembling / assembling, driver and BIOS updates, battery have resurrected and now can hold some charge and now it is possible to reflash IMM, but...
I can't reflash Android OS image into IMM because adb and fastboot say, that there is no devices.
I can't use 3G in Android OS or in Windows OS, but in windows OS IMM have network adapter in device composition.

BTW
I have this USB devices composition for IMM:

Composite USB device (VID_17EF&PID_7408)
|-Lenovo Duplicity ADB interface (VID_17EF&PID_7408&IM_03)
|-IMM (i haven't found driver for this but close sibling is "Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet ADB Interface") (VID_17EF&PID_7408&IM_02)
|-Remote NDIS based Internet sharing device (VID_17EF&PID_7408&IM_00)
|-USB Storage device (VID_17EF&PID_7408&IM_04)
| |- Lenovo Mass Storage USB device

CONCLUSIONS. It is easy to build X1 hybrid and it is working.
3G module may be more in demand for thinkpad general usecase.
But IMM can be used for Android hackers on the go. It is unique thinkpad (PC) that have hardware ARM virtualization on top of x86-64 platform. Bad thing - it seems that no more Android images for IMM and there are many problems in flashing non Lenovo images to IMM.
It have design flaws and the worst, that it have been discontinued support for IMM shortly after launching it. Screen is the second drawback - 1366x768 13" TN with Gorilla Glass and WITHOUT TOUCH - WTF??? (i don't want touchscreen on thinkpad notebook, but on Android emulator it can be a highlight).

PS
Dave - i have 2 questions to you:
- what is tc4400 and X61s U-160 in your signature
- and how many USB devices do you see in device manager of your X1 hybrid. You can switch device manager to show "devices by connection" and than find "USB Enhanced host controllers" in device tree and find what devices connected to them.

tc4400 is an HP convertible tablet, it has close to the same hardware as an x61 convertible.
U-160 is a Lenovo IdeaPad

If I choose devices by connection, I find 2 USB Enhanced Host Controllers, 1C2D and 1C26

I installed Win. 10 64bit, all updates done Windows and Lenovo.

I show 2 devices with yellow tags there, a PCI Serial Port and the Base System Device that I saw before.
