Physician heal thyself OR now what..?!

#1 Post by BillMorrow » Sun Dec 22, 2019 2:07 am

i SHOULD know more but i sinmply can't think of anything else..
PROBLEM: X1 extreme gen 1 has lost its ability to see the internet when the internet is, in fact, there.. (writing this on the same wifi channel on my X1-C gen 3)..
rebooted everything, well, ok, the access point/router and the X1 C extreme and still the X1 will not see an internet connection but it DOES see but cannot access the router..
and thought..?
FWIW i have on site warranty so i'll call lenovo sunday and see what they have to say, but meanwhile it would be nice to get it back myself.. AND, just to pile on my big desktop crapped out friday night but came back saturday after swapping memory in and out so this gremlin is contagious..

Apparently you have joined an increasing crowd with the same X1E problem.
It seems that using the SD card-reader kicks off the problem.
Try an Intel Administrator driver: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en ... rking.html

i used an old 1GB SD card in the SD slot for the first time saturday..
previously i had only used SD adapters with micro SD chips in them.. nothing smaller than 16GB, usually 32GB or larger..
still looking at the intel page from the link you supplied.. :)
what is it, a driver update..?

and merry christmas, there in EIRE..
my red head says she will never go back there.. at least to derry where she grew up during the "troubles"..

They are an Intel driver update.

Ask your red head to have a look at "The Derry Girls" on Netflix: https://www.netflix.com/ie/title/80238565
I'm sure it will make her (and possibly your) day!

derry girls.. yep.. did that, she did not like it at all.. i guess being a derry girl herself but 3 generations removed from that series might be what killed it for a real derry girl.. :)

but back to this effing driver.. i got it, i copied it to the X1 C extreme and the installer requires that computer to be online so the install of the intel installer has failed..!
so how to bypass this hidden little 'gotcha'.. ?

i hope you're keeping the same hours there as you did here.. :)
no one else seems to be around.. :(

Your wifi card is most likely an Intel 9560.
The above link I gave you was for the latest "Intel Administrator" drivers, the 'highest' spec you can get.
For "regular" users there is this Intel link: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/downlo ... duct=99446
Elsewhere I have read that an uninstall and then let W10 find a driver for that 9560 works.
Also found this Lenovo link: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P ... 412#M78989

Other than keeping my extremities crossed and hope that some of it works for you, there's not much else I can do.
I'm waiting for an AX200 wifi card to put in my T440p after a BIOS mod. Its current AC-7260 card keeps conking out if I walk away for more than 1/2 hour.

Time wise Ireland is 5 hours ahead of Georgia. I usually get up around 5am, which is midnight at your side of the pond.

the issue is there is NO EFFING internet ability on the X1 extreme..
so uninstalling and reinstalling the wifi card won't work IF win 10 needs the internet to get the new drivers.. NOW it might be that doing a remove and reinstall will reset the stupid gremlin.. i'll give that a try after i finish this post..
will also check the links you provided above.. (thanks)

i have 3 year onsite warranty on this thinkpad but now there is no telephone number to call support, just a new web page for lenovo to further degrade the reputation of thinkpads and the old IBM PC division way of doing business..
so, i have spent hours winding my path through this arcane crap..
which failed since the s/n was so tiny and a little scuffed up i got that part wrong until i got the s/n out of the bios on the X1..

EDIT: removing and reinstalling the intel wireless AC 9560 did not get internet back..!
2nd EDIT: after effing around with the new onloine support stuff, many hours of it, lenovo is now sending me a wifi card.. a CRU (customer replaceable unit) for supposed delivery on christmas day.. so much for on site warranty..

Bill, I feel with you.
Not to be obnoxious, but how about downloading those drivers on another laptop and transfer them via USB-stick?
Then uninstall old & install new drivers.

Bill, do you also have the proprietary Lenovo LAN dongle so that your X1E1 (X1 Extreme Gen 1) will connect to the internet?

We have the X1C3 (X1 Carbon Gen 3), and we can confirm that X1E1 can use X1C3's proprietary Lenovo LAN dongle (and vice versa). Both look identical!

Our point is this: We suspect that the proprietary Lenovo LAN dongle from X1C3/X1C5/X1C6/X1C7 can be used interchangeably with X1E1/X1E2.

Oh, and Merry Christmas!

[Edit: We are using SD adapter with 64 GB Micro-SD. We have never directly put a SD card into the X1E1's SD adapter yet.]
Daily Driver: (X1E3) X1 Extreme 3rd Gen | mobile broadband (WWAN)
Current Thinkpads: X1E3 | X1E1 | X1C10 | X1C9 | X1C4 | X1C3 | X230
Retired Thinkpads: X250 | T410 | T42 | 560 (circa 1996)

thanks, yes, i found that dongle and tried but no joy.. issue is the same, wifi or ethernet hard wired..
and MERRY Christmas top all y'all.. :)

lenovo support thought the issue to be the hardware.. so a new wifi card arrived tuesday and i swapped it in..
result: arghhh.. :(
so i chatted with support and a smart guy who had the thought to disable all the other items on the wifi list.. BUT it was time for the daily bike ride up cardiac hill so i thanked him and put things aside..
then the light bulb popped ON and i thought "HEY, dummy, swap out the SSD"..
so tonight, 1 am christmas day i found the original clone of the original preload of win 10, one that i had not yet shoved into the X1C-3 or X1C-2 and VIOLA! up the X1C-E-1 comes.. all hardware is good..
which means i was right, it is a software issue occasioned by 'something'.. the old 1GB SD card from my wife's camera of her trip to the not-quite south pole.. penguins galore and lots of ice which left 'something' in my thinkpad..
now that my mind has thrown off the stupid blanket i can at least access the machine and see what i can learn..
maybe a virus..?
so next i'll see what ESET thinks of things.. :)

no idea is obnoxious..

but i got the intel drivers for dummies file from your link, above and updated the driver..

no joy, see my post above..

merry christmas.. :)

EDIT: Boxing day: scaned SSD from X1C-E gen 1 with ESET, nothing found..
so, AFAIK no virus is effing the thing up..
my next move is to do a recovery on an unused 1TB SSD and reload stuff, incl ESET, etc. and then consider my next move..

SO, to update this thread:
after doing the ESET scan of the 1TB SSD with the "issue" and using another SSD in the X1CE (which WAS able to access the internet, i decided i would do a "retain all applications recovery" and to see if that would fix this issue..
so, reinstall;ed the affected SSD and two things turned up..
1. the firefox "reload all previous pages" reloaded nothing.. :(
2. internet access returned.. :) !

SO! i'm going to try the old wifi card and see what shows up..
