ssd mSATA cache improvements

#1 Post by FTC » Wed May 01, 2013 4:16 am

Hi,

This is only to comment for anyone's reference the huge improvement that adding an mSATA SSD drive as a disk cache (w/expresscache) has made to my T430.My boot to desktop times have been reduced from 3:30 minutes to 1.04, and all most used programs load now instantly.. I know that of course adding a big SSD as the primary partition would be even better, but such solution is more expensive (note that you can have a 30GB SSD mSATA disk to use as cache for about 30-40 USD today, but 100+ GB SSDs are much more expensive).
So all in all, a highly recommended upgrade.

I don't think you need a big SSD for the OS. That's the great thing about the mSATA SSD, a small SSD to use as the boot drive and keep the platter drive in the main bay for storage where speed is not as important.

ZaZ hi, yes, you are right, but if you just put the OS and a couple of apps im the SSD, then I think in overall it *may* still be better a good cache algorithm, that adapts itself dynamically to store what you use more, and has an almost zero setup time...
