T440s and warranty - worth it?

#1 Post by nimare2 » Mon Jul 20, 2015 12:23 am

I just bought a t440s 20AQ-CTO1WW used online and it has the standard 1yr depot warranty which is about to expire, I don't mind spending the extra $$$ for an extended warranty but I am wondering about the type of service I can get. Due to my situation getting a repair on-site is kind of impossible (work hours :P), so would getting it be at all beneficial? Perhaps when choosing depot services? I have the topseller option in the warranty services provided, does that mean that the model I bought was a topseller model? Always thought CTO meant it was a customized unit. I saw the post a little ways down about how acctsw1144 was a bit hesitant about getting his warranty case cleared with lenovo, is this the 'new' Lenovo or just a one-time deal?

Tough call. I'd personally say no, mainly because I'm good at figuring things out or finding someone who can. My notebook isn't mission critical either, so if I had to send it in, I wouldn't be in a tight spot. If your notebook is more important to you than is mine, perhaps the warranty extension is worth considering.

You don't have have it fixed at work. The few times I've had on-site done, it was at my house. Accidental coverage is a no-go as it needs to be added in the first 90 days I believe. Cost is an issue too. I don't know what they're charging these days, but if it's $300-400 for the extension, you can probably buy a used T440s for that price in the not too distant future.

The most likely outcome is if you buy the warranty, nothing happens, but if you don't, it DOA within a week of the warranty expiring. :P

I had an onsite warranty for my mother in laws T530. I've also had warranty work performed by the depot. Based on these two issues I can honestly say the techs at the depot seem to know how to repair the machines better than the onsite techs.

I bought 5 year warranties on all my T4x and T6x Thinkpads and in all cases came out way ahead in repairs (both series had known issues). I got 3 year warranties on my T430 Thinkpads (5 year was no longer available) and 2/4 of them have had repairs (replacement motherboards). Mail in (depot) service in all cases and the repairs were carried out flawlessly. Moreover, Lenovo Tech Support is the best there is, but only available during the warranty period.

So I would go for it!
