New aftermarket 9 cell battery temperature sensor 25c

#1 Post by marlboro95 » Mon Dec 02, 2024 3:32 am

Hi,
Purchased a 9 cell 44++ battery from Kingsener.
Charge seems to hold well and the capacity exceeds OEM which is nice.
But the temperature sensor is always 25 degrees c. I told the seller and he replied that it is not a problem. DOH
I asked him to confirm that all 44++ batteries they are selling has a constant temperature reading and he stopped replying to me. Haha...

Has anyone else faced this kind of problem?

I purchased the 6 cell Kingsener for x230 from official store on AliExpress. My inaccurate measurements puts it at 55 to 60 Wh, or 5.5 hours at 12W consumption. lmsensors BAT0 ACPI only reports voltage and current, no temperature listed. What is the worst that can happen to run a battery without any overtemperature protection? Perhaps there is still temperature protection, feels like a critical component in a laptop battery, especially a "premium" grade.

Does anyone know what the purpose of the plastic cover over the battery is on the inside of x230 chassis?:

back when i had TPFanControl on my ThinkPads T42p and T500 I recall seeing temperature sensor for the batteries and it always seemed to show ambient temp.

I would not worry about it.

Only battery I ever felt overheat was a very weak OEM T400 6 cell that got physically hot to the touch when charging. I got scared and never used it again.

Best I can suggest is do your due diligence and if you determine your battery is unsafe, take appropriate measures to not set catch on fire. But I feel like this will be a 1/1000000 scenario and is very unlikely to have anything to do with the temperature sensor. I do not blame the seller for stopping contact beause from their perspective they plausibly conclude you may be like the countless other buyers who prod for a vexatious refund. Such action if taken could be construed as fraud.

I had an aftermarket Lliano branded Acer battery that's 6 cell and of that kind of grade, measuring to 56-58Wh, rather than the 42-45Wh of the crappy no name cells that you'd get with cheap aftermarket batteries.
I got curious and tore it down, only to find out that they purposefully did not adhere the temperature sensor to the skin of the cells??? It was just hanging off the PCB and going nowhere
Some very bad no name batteries will also have a dummy "sensor", where the "sensor" is actually just a 10KOhm resistor and then it'll constantly read 25C.
How thermistors are specified is actually by the resistance value at 25C ambient, and then a secondary set of values at 80C ambient. So a thermistor labelled 10KOhm will read 10KOhm at 25C, but much much lower value at 80C. (I know this cus I broke the thermistor on one of my battery rebuilds and had to guess what the replacement should be - oops)
If the BMS IC is configured with the expectation of a 10K thermistor and then you put a 10KOhm resistor in its place, it'll just read 25C constantly.
Cheap 25 USD/Euro batteries typically have these crap, but if you paid over twice as much for a 6 cell and it still has these, that's disappointing.
