When the battery is low on my W541, around anywhere 9% and lower, the screen starts flickering like mad based on CPU activity. Ironically enough just typing "thinkpad LCD flickers when battery is low" into Google showes a bunch of results for the W540/541 (and similar) series specifically with the 1920x1080 screen and this issue (and not faulty battery related).
After a lot of research however, there is no diagnosis into what goes faulty on the LCD itself to cause this issue, other than the general fix is to upgrade to the 3k screen which does not exhibit this fault. (Apparently some people run into this issue at around 30%, so I assume this issue could get worse with age, so maybe caps on the backlight power delivery?)
I have recently changed out my battery, and every replacement battery does the same thing, so I can verify it's not a fault. (I also borrowed my friends W541 with a 3k screen, and hers never has any of these issues with my batteries, including my 9 year old 9 cell.)
Has anyone here exhibited this specific issue, and diagnosed the fault on the panel itself? I've done board level repair for HP, Gateway and Dell and was hoping to repair the screen itself rather than replace it. If not, I could give it a shot, and if not it might be an excuse to upgrade to the 3k screen.

Re: Flickering Screen on Low Battery
That these machines even work on battery for a short time is a bonus.
These are WORKstations with high power needs, not laptops that are supposed to work on batteries.
If you need them to run on battery, maybe you should start charging sooner, say at around 20%?
From what I have read on the web, these flickerings also happen with 3K screens when on a dock with a 135W charger.
Based on that, most likely there's a design fault in the power system on the motherboard.
Low (battery or charger) power: sporadic problems.
Full (battery or charger) power: no problems.

Re: Flickering Screen on Low Battery
Worked when I bought it just fine. Being a workstation or not, it should be able to regulate its power.
I'm going to just going to turn around and sign out with that attitude. Goodbye. When I do find the failing component unable to either boost or regulate power with the backlight, I'll be sure to keep that info to myself then. No wonder I left social media years ago.
