Unable to install win 10 on thinkpad x61s
Unable to install win 10 on thinkpad x61s
I want to install Windows 10 on my ThinkPad X61s but I don't get far in the installer as i get the "A media driver your computer needs is missing" error. I've tried most of the solutions like unplugging and plugging back in the usb, I've tried the solutions given on many websites, but I still didn't fix the error. I thought that i might get the driver itself, but I don't know which is the driver. If someone could tell me which driver for the ThinkPad X61s I would need, that would be nice.
I'm the original owner of a(n unmodded) ThinkPad X61s (2009).

Re: Unable to install win 10 on thinkpad x61s
It didn't work. Should I just install windows 7 and then upgrade to windows 10?

Re: Unable to install win 10 on thinkpad x61s
While I have not tried to install Windows 10 on the X61s in particular, that error typically will happen if the USB flash drive cannot be found. If you've tried multiple USB ports, try a different USB flash drive, and perhaps use a different Windows 10 ISO if the problem persists.
I don't believe the X61s should need any special drivers for Windows 10, so that shouldn't be the issue. From what I've seen, this is not what will happen with a hard drive error, but rather it's accessing the installer source files. If it can't find the hard drive then it'll specifically say 'no drives found.' (Of course, weird things happen and I could be mistaken - I can only provide advice based upon my own experience.)
Technical explanation: When you boot from the flash drive, the BIOS knows how to find the boot files, but once the file is booted, the boot files have to then find their way to the installation source files again because the BIOS isn't smart enough to do that. If it can't find them, this is what you'll see.
And on a last note, you could try the upgrade but I suspect you'll run into the same problem. I'd make a full disk backup first in case anything goes awry.
Good luck to you!
