Upgrade to Win 11 for X220 x230 T420s ??

#1 Post by mpcook » Sun Sep 29, 2024 1:29 pm

I am sure there is a simple answer to this question but I cannot find it through search. I would like to upgrade a laptop to Windows 11. I have x220, T420s and X230 to choose from. I have been able to find a few bits of info about a registry change, which I did on the X230. Next I tried (1) download and install the Installation Assistant from MS Website. This results in the error "does not meet minimum requirements". Next I tried to create installation media, it gave me an error as well. Any easy way to do this? I chose the X230 just because it was "slightly" more modern than the other choices.

Use Rufus to create the Windows 11 installer disk.

Thanks, any helpful hints on how to set up the install. I downloaded Rufus, created a Windows 11 disk on a memory stick. Tried to install and I am told my drive cannot be used as it is MBR. And now Windows 10 will not boot.

IIRC Win 11 requires UEFI mode (set the BIOS to either prefer UEFI boot devices or exclude legacy boot entirely) and GPT-formatted disks, so you'll need to convert the disk partition from MBR. I rarely do that because I just wipe the first 100 megabytes of the disk to effectively wipe any boot sector and partition table info (using the dd command on Linux).

That said, here's a guide from Microsoft's website:

I did inplace Windows 11 update (from Windows 10) on my X220 last week and was surprised how smooth it was. I was waiting with the update till 2025, because I believe the update process will be more polished now. Everything works, including the WWAN modem and fingerprint sensor. I removed all the Lenovo software long time ago, no crappy 3rd party antivirus software installed.
