Windows 10 Anniversary edition on X220
Windows 10 Anniversary edition on X220
Anybody tried win10 Anniversary (version 1607) on a thinkpad yet?
I have an X220 - core i5 2540M, mb 4291F29, 2x4mb samsung 1600mhz ram, 256gb adata msata running win10 with 500gb 7200rpm HGST data disk.
I did the free upgrade to win10 pro from win7 ultimate about 12 months ago; all went well bar a couple of hassles with drivers (mainly the ricoh card reader) and I have been pleased with performance etc. Until now, all the proferred upgrades have gone well too, and I have tried hard to grasp all the myriad of privacy settings to keep MS' intrusions into my computing experience to a minimum. Feeling at a loose end this week, I decided to do the Anniversary edition upgrade, and spent the next day and a half wondering what had happened to my tatty looking but snappy performing little laptop. At first I wondered if it was a Mozilla incompatability as firefox and thunderbird were both running slow and hanging lots. But actually, it was the whole shebang - file explorer was the same, as was attempting to install programmes - I had a go at Classic Shell as the start menu in Anniversary is not to my liking. Other frustrations followed and eventually I gave up and rolled back to version 1511. At least that went well, all my settings etc returned.
Anyone else tried it/having hassles? I'm not about to try again until I see how others are going with it

Re: Windows 10 Anniversary edition on X220
Welcome to the forum
I did the version 1607 Update to my X301 , a T43 and an Asus laptop and things have gone very smoothly.
Although I downloaded the one ISO for 32 bit and 64 bit from the Media Creation Tool and then installed to USB using Rufus.
I predominantly did it this way because I have about eight computers to upgrade but I think it is probably the best way to do the upgrade.
Keep in mind you can't put off the upgrade forever and even if you have "Defer Updates" set in Windows 10 that will only defer things for 4 months.
Besides that I think this will be an annual occurrence these major updates / upgrades.
Bit of a PITA but that is Microsoft

Re: Windows 10 Anniversary edition on X220
Interesting post as I had the same problem when updating my ThinkPad P70, updated all the relevant drivers to the latest releases still didn't fix the problem so rolled back to the previous version. It felt liked the CPU was throttled so everything was very slow, menu and dialogue boxes to an age to display.
However updated my X1C 1st generation and that has been stable and fine.
Waiting for a fix here.

Thanks shawross and ccaasjf. As you say shawross, upgrading is now inevitable, and I'm hopeful that all will go well when I do - when I went from 7 ultimate to 10, I did the in windows upgrade first, then later used the media creation tool to do a clean install, and I'm sure performance was best after that. So I'll probably do the same thing when I upgrade to Anniversary.

Re: Windows 10 Anniversary edition on X220
Of course, now we have MS acknowledging there is a problem, particularly with setups like mine running the OS on ssd, and data etc on a separate hd. So, not just a thinkpad problem, but I'm not interested in upgrading until MS fix it.

Re: Windows 10 Anniversary edition on X220
On my T440, I received the update automatically shortly after aug. 2, and the installation and subsequent operation has been very smooth indeed. On the Compaq desktop of my wife (8 years old), I did not receive the update automatically, so I did it manually using the Media Creation Tool. Also here, no issues, running like a dream.
On the T60's and the Ideapad there is still no progress, and I have chosen not to press the issue but rather just wait till it arrives automatically in view of the many reports of difficulties.
I suspect that MS could be slowing the updates till fixes for the reported problems have been found.
