Brand New P1 Gen 5 Wont Connect to External Displays via TB4

#1 Post by 2uzfev8 » Fri Sep 09, 2022 10:23 pm

I received my P1 Gen 5 and attempted to connect it to my external monitor thru a variety of ways. I am at my absolute wits end as all of the below works seamlessly on a 2 year old Dell XPS 13. I am ready to toss in the towel and purchase a Dell. Have had a T61p for 10 years without issue and the new P1 has caused nothing but frustrations for something that should seemingly be so simple.

I tried the following to no avail:

- USBC to HDMI/Displayport/DVI-D adapters - every brand on Amazon. None work on my Dell monitor at home.

- USBC to Displayport cable - did not work on my Dell monitor at home.

I took my machine to Best Buy and the USBC to DisplayPort cable worked on 1 out of 3 monitors that I tried it on. It only worked on a Samsung gaming monitor. The other two LG IPS displays were not detected by the laptop.

What gives? All updates are installed. Tried enabling/disabling TB4 hardware in device manger. Is my machine a dud or does TB4 have compatibility issues with legacy standards (DisplayPort 1.2)

FWIW - both ports do transmit data via expansion dongles (read/write) from external memory cards etc. I just cannot get DP out to work or be recognized.......

That laptop is not for nothing also called: PIG-5.
Why don't you try a HDMI cable?

Thanks for the info on TB - all information and documentation on the machine indicates that my connected to a DP 1.2 port should be flawless.

What's interesting is that the monitor will wake from sleep when I press "detect external monitors" but no connection is established and the monitor returns to sleep.

As a follow up, I completed a clean install of windows and all is working now. What a royal PITA.

I will say that a fresh install of Windows has never been easier! I was done with all drivers and Lenovo Commercial Advantage installed in less than a hour.

For the record, W10 or W11? I have a P1G5 coming in soon and plan on nuking W11 in favor of W10.
P1 Gen 5
P52
T25 Anniversary

Many more as well!

Windows 11.

I found out what it was - I downloaded drivers direct from Nvidia and for some reason that botched the TB4 display out connectivity. It only worked on 1 out of 4 displays that I tried it on because it was a gaming display with some Nvidia firmware/software baked into it.

Weird.

Which P1 did you go with? What specs?
