Any fix for battery not charging on P72 other than the standard fixes?

Good day all,
As a bit of background, I have had a similar issue on an older lenovo thinkpad, and the "unplug battery and hold power button" fix worked... here it doesnt... at least it doesnt reliably.
I recently picked up a used P72 and have been updating pretty much everything to max spec. The original battery would not charge.
So - after a bunch of research, I picked up an aftermarket battery and installed it - and all seemed well. Then after a few days, it would just sit at a certain percentage and not charge. I tried deleting the driver, reinstalling it... no luck.
I then tried the "old faithful", and pulled the battery and held the power button for a minute. That worked... for another few days.. as I type this I'm no longer charging and just sitting around 83%.
I ran the Lenovo test suite and got a failed charge test.... duh! lol.
So - before I pull the machine apart - again... I wanted to see if there is a true fix for this?
I checked for firmware updates and everything says I'm up to date... and the Lenovo support site about battery firmware says my machine isn't affected...
I'm Stumped. I'm sure its something in the charge circuit that gets reset when you do the unplug-replug deal..
I love this machine - but its kindof worthless if I can't rely on the battery to charge.
