I have 16 GB of RAM on my T14. I don't recall whether I upgraded it or whether it came that way. But some of my software is running slowly so I'd like to upgrade it. Can it handle more? I read the product specs from Lenovo and they say :
Max Memory
• Up to 40GB (8GB soldered + 32GB SO-DIMM) DDR4-3200
• Up to 48GB (16GB soldered + 32GB SO-DIMM) DDR4-3200
But I don't know what that means.

Yes, you can add more memory. One of the memory sticks is soldered to the motherboard, either 8GB or 16GB, and cannot be upgraded. The other is upgradeable, so you can add a 32GB stick of memory. If your machine has a 8GB soldered stick and you add a 32GB stick, you'll now have 40GB, but 48GB if your machine came with a 16GB soldered stick.

That's good news. What specifications do I need to look for when shopping for RAM?

The answer is in your original post:
DDR4-3200
DDR4 is the RAM type, and 3200 is the speed.
You need laptop RAM, referred to as "SODIMM"

You can use Crucial hardware compatibility checker.
