Ubuntu 24.04 LTS on W520 - Problems with the Quadro 2000M

#1 Post by Treeman » Sat Apr 26, 2025 5:30 pm

Hallo,

I'm trying to run Ubuntu 24.04 on my W520 (it would be a shame to put this great piece of hardware to rest just because there are no further updates for windows)

Everything runs remarkably fine with one exception, the Quadro 2000M graphic chip. The included Nouveau driver is installed, yet once a launch my application, the application says
"Cannon find a compatible Vulkan device or driver"

What I learned so far is that the Nouveau driver does not fully support Vulkan (yet?) so I tried the Nvidia driver, but failed. It was installed sucessfully and "lspci -nnk | grep -i VGA -A2" shows the following kernel modules: nvidiafb, nouveau, nvidia_drm, nvidia, but there is "no Kernel driver in use" (which is stated for the integrated intel graphic card).

The nouveau driver is blocked, and "lsmod | grep nouveau" shows no result so I guess the blocking works, the nvida driver which I installed was 470.

At this point I ran out of ideas. Is there a working Nvidia driver? Or will there someday be a version of the Nouveau driver which supports vulkan?

Best regards and many thanks in advice!
