Update on my perfecting use of Ubuntu in my Thinkpad Edge (AMD Dual Core Model)
Wifi was the sticky point. The drivers do not play well with the wifi card. I've got the wifi problem resolved until Linux community comes out with a driver that is better compatible with the Edge wifi card. Ubuntu auto installed and runs the card but connections are slow and unstable. In fact, Ubuntu runs the Edge card inconsistently. Sometimes it will connect right away to the access point and sometimes surfing speed will be quick but it slows to a crawl and connection is disrupted to often.
I solved the problem with the Wi-Fire long range wifi adapter. The Wi-Fire is made by one of those cool little companies that works with the Linux Community. The Wi-Fire uses (intentionally) the UW2353 radio which has been included in Linux kernel since 2008. (version 2.6.13 and newer). It runs perfectly with the ZD1211rw driver and its PLUG and PLAY in Linux only. With Windows and MAC, you must use the Wi-Fire CD and install software.
Note: To let Wi-Fire work in Linux, you must first click on "enable wireless" and disable that software by removing the check mark.
Then plug the Wi_Fire USB into the Laptop USB. The Wi-Fire gives me a lot more power than I need at home but away from home the 1000 ft range and directional antenna system can come in handy. To see what this unique device looks like and for info
