That little utility will check your system to see if you are *drum-roll* "Vista Ready."
I think it is down at the moment, but it should be back up pretty soon.

I have yet to see why I need Vista. I have nothing that I haven't already optimized for performance nor do I need to worry about dealing with any changes that Microsoft has included in Vista that I can't use to get a benefit.

I know for sure that my T40 will not be able to run Vista with the full Aero Glass interface. However, I have yet to see any reason why I should switch over to Vista when XP has served me well for so long.

Vista? It's May 2006. Call me in May 2007 when Service Pack 1 is released. XP works just fine.

We're sorry, but your PC cannot currently install and run the core experiences of Windows Vista.
However, you may be able prepare your computer for Windows Vista by upgrading your PC hardware.
You will need to take the following actions to run Windows Vista.
Upgrade your CPU
800 MHz required to install Windows Vista (Your computer currently has 0.00 Hz)
Your Central Processing Unit does not meet the minimum supported system requirements for Windows Vista. We recommend at least a 1 GHz CPU for all premium editions of Windows Vista. Contact your PC retailer to see if an upgrade is available.
Gee! Think it might be broken?
This was the report from the Vista "Are you ready" applet for my 1.7GHz 2373-GEU T41p!
For the record, I'm already running the latest BETA on my backup 2373-GGU and it's stunning!
Regrds,
James

Actually, since Vista is now delayed until early 2007, call me in early 2008, when Service Pack 1 is out. (Of course, Vista may be further delayed, too.)

When they mean by minimum requirement of 512MB,
would the computer run smoothly
or just run nearly collapsed?
b/c mine has only 512MB. Thanks.

With XP Pro, in an office environment, our machines are now 1GB RAM minimum. Some users get 2GB.
Microsoft and Intel and other chip makers no doubt work very hard at ways for us to spend lots of money on unnecessary upgrades.
Luckily, that's our hobby

I for one and looking forward to the new networking stack, built-in image based installs, and probably a host of other things that will make my life as a network admin better.
I'll upgrade. And I'll likely turn off Aero Glass (I don't need it). Every version of NT-based systems has been better than the last (been using it since 3.51). I remember people saying the same thing about w2k (vs) xp - and they still do.

Current speculation with the beta builds with the current memory footprint (likely to change somewhat maybe when the product ships) is you'll want to have 1.5-2.0GB of RAM. since the system purports to boot with 700MB with base services, that sounds about right.
Compare a base NT 4.0 or w2k install's memory footprint to XP - especially XP SP2. NT-based systems have always been memory hogs (I remember being intriguiged by the newly released NT 3.1, and the insanely expensive [at the time] 16MB of RAM that was suggested). If you want stability and features, you're going to pay for it with an increased memory footprint. Look at the memory requirements of a Linux computer versus what they required just 10 years ago. It's all insane.
But then again a 1GB (or two) SO-DIMM stick is still fairly inexpensive.

Pretty good to run Vista? Not a chance, if I have read things properly. 850 MHz is not nearly enough to run XP properly (my first attempt with XP was 850 MHz). I had to get over 1 GHz to have XP perform well. I don't see Vista as being less resource intensive.makaveli559m wrote:My laptop will be as soon as I upgrade the cpuIm putting an 850mhz CPU on my A20m Thinkpad. I wanted to go higher but I want better battery life. 850mhz is pretty good right?

Whatever happened to people just installing stuff, trying it out, and experimenting with it to get it working on Grey Systems (i.e. unsupported, not explicity stated as supported)? Same goes for "Will this game run on[powerful mobile graphics card]?"
If bandwidth is at a premium, you can order disks or *then* use the Windows Vista Tester.
